North Korean Troops in Russian Uniforms Advance Towards Ukraine, Raising Concerns for US Officials

North Korean troops, reportedly wearing Russian uniforms and equipped with Russian gear, are moving to the Kursk region near Ukraine. This development is seen as dangerous and destabilising by US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin. He spoke about this at a press conference in Washington alongside South Korean Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun. Concerns are rising over Pyongyang's deployment of up to 11,000 troops to Russia.

North Korean Troops Move Towards Ukraine Border

Some North Korean troops are believed to be heading towards combat zones in western Russia, although specific locations were not disclosed. A senior Korean official mentioned that more than 3,000 troops have already moved towards these areas. Advance units from North Korea have reportedly arrived in the Kursk region, which borders Ukraine.

North Korea's Military Support for Russia

Austin expressed a high likelihood that Russia will use these North Korean troops in combat. Discussions are ongoing about how to respond to this deployment, which could potentially broaden or prolong the conflict in Ukraine. When asked if this situation might lead other nations to become more directly involved, Austin acknowledged that it could "encourage others to take action," though he did not provide further details.

Kim Yong-hyun stated that he does not believe this deployment will trigger war on the Korean Peninsula but warned it could heighten security threats between the two nations. He suggested there is a "high possibility" that Pyongyang might seek advanced technologies, such as tactical nuclear and ballistic missile capabilities, in exchange for its troop deployment.

Global Concerns Over North Korea-Russia Ties

The strengthening relationship between North Korea and Russia has raised alarms worldwide. Leaders are concerned about how this alliance might expand the war in Ukraine and what military aid Russia might provide to Pyongyang in return. Austin noted that Russian President Vladimir Putin has lost many troops, forcing Moscow to either mobilise more of its own forces or seek help from others.

The US estimates around 10,000 North Korean troops are currently in Russia. However, Seoul and its allies believe the number has increased to 11,000. A senior South Korean presidential official shared this information under anonymity during a background briefing.

Military Movements Near Ukraine

A Ukrainian official revealed that North Korean troops are stationed approximately 50 kilometres from the Ukrainian border with Russia. This official was not authorised to publicly disclose this information and provided no additional details. Meanwhile, Russia has had to redirect some resources to the Kursk border region due to Ukraine's offensive there.

US leaders suggest that using North Korean forces indicates significant degradation of Moscow's military strength after more than two years of war. Additionally, North Korea has supplied munitions to Russia. Earlier this month, the White House released images purportedly showing North Korea shipping 1,000 containers of military equipment to Russia by rail.

Potential Exchanges Between Pyongyang and Moscow

A key concern remains what North Korea might receive in return for providing troops. Officials have not yet specified what Pyongyang may have requested or what Moscow has offered. In their Pentagon meeting, Kim and Austin agreed on continuing large-scale military exercises and enhancing nuclear deterrence cooperation.

They also plan to improve both countries' abilities to deter and respond to North Korean missile launches by upgrading early launch warning systems. According to a fact sheet released by the Pentagon on Wednesday, Austin and Kim will meet with Secretary of State Antony Blinken and South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yul at the State Department on Thursday.
