No Political Comeback For Sheikh Hasina, Says Son Sajeeb Wazed

Following Sheikh Hasina's resignation as Bangladesh's Prime Minister, her son Sajeeb Wazed Joy announced that she would not return to politics. Joy, who served as an adviser to the PM, mentioned that she had been contemplating stepping down since Sunday.

Sheikh Hasina resigned on Monday and left the country for her safety. Her son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, told BBC News that she was retiring from politics. Despite her efforts to improve the economy, recent events left her extremely disappointed.

Economic Achievements and Discontent

Under Hasina's leadership since 2009, Bangladesh's economy grew by over 6% annually. This growth lifted millions out of poverty and transformed the garment industry. However, despite these achievements, there was underlying discontent among the population due to her strict governance.

Joy highlighted his mother's economic successes, stating, "She has turned Bangladesh around. When she took over power, it was considered a failing state. It was a poor country. Until today, it was considered one of the rising tigers of Asia." He added that she was very disappointed with recent developments.

Violence and Political Turmoil

The situation escalated on Sunday when at least 98 people were killed in clashes between protesters and Awami League supporters. Protesters burned down Awami League offices and attacked party leaders. Thirteen policemen were also beaten to death during the violence.

Defending the police's actions against protesters, Joy said, "You've had policemen beaten to death, 13 just yesterday. So what do you expect the police to do when mobs are beating people to death?"

No Political Comeback

Joy told BBC's Newshour programme that his mother had been deliberating about stepping down as Prime Minister since Sunday. He stated there would be no political comeback for Hasina because she felt deeply disappointed after all her hard work led to a minority rising against her.

Despite economic progress under Hasina's rule, questions about election fairness persisted. These concerns fueled opposition-led protests demanding an end to her rule.

"She's very disappointed," Joy reiterated during his interview with BBC News. Experts often advise politicians never to say "never," but Joy firmly stated his mother's decision.

The recent turmoil in Bangladesh highlights the complex interplay between economic development and political stability. While Hasina's tenure saw significant economic gains, underlying political tensions ultimately led to her resignation and retirement from politics.
