Nimisha Priya’s Scheduled Execution In Yemen Put On Hold : Reports

The scheduled execution of Indian nurse Nimisha Priya, originally set for July 16, has reportedly been postponed by Yemeni authorities, according to media reports citing Indian government sources.

News agencies PTI and ANI confirmed the development, stating, "In the case of Nimisha Priya, it has been learnt that the local authorities in Yemen have postponed the execution scheduled for July 16, 2025."

The postponement comes after sustained diplomatic efforts by the Government of India, which has been providing assistance in the case from the beginning. According to ANI, Indian officials have remained in contact with both the local jail authorities and the prosecutor's office, leading to a delay in the execution. The report adds that New Delhi had made renewed efforts in recent days to buy more time for Priya's family to work toward a mutually agreeable resolution with the victim's family.

This development follows just a day after the Central government informed the Supreme Court that its capacity to intervene was limited. "There is a point till which the Government of India can go. We have reached that," the government counsel stated before the apex court on Monday.

Who is Nimisha Priya?

Nimisha Priya, a 38-year-old nurse from Kollengode in Kerala's Palakkad district, has been on death row in Yemen since 2020 after being convicted of murdering a Yemeni national in 2017.

Priya had moved to Yemen in 2011 along with her husband and daughter to work as a nurse. While her family later returned to India, she continued to stay in Sana'a.

She later partnered with a Yemeni man, Talal Abdo Mahdi, to set up a clinic. However, Priya alleged that Mahdi forged documents to claim a marriage with her and subjected her to physical, emotional, and financial abuse. She told Yemeni authorities that Mahdi withheld her passport and frequently drugged her.

Following her conviction, she was sentenced to death by a Yemeni court, and the Houthis' Supreme Judicial Council upheld the sentence in November 2023.

As of now, the postponement provides a brief window for further negotiation, though the legal and diplomatic complexities of the case remain high.
