Nepal Deputy PM, Pokhara Mayor Sustain Burn Injuries In A Balloon Explosion At Pokhara Tourism Year Ceremony

During the inauguration of Pokhara Tourism Year, a balloon explosion injured Nepal's Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Bishnu Prasad Paudel and Pokhara Metropolitan Mayor Dhanraj Acharya. The incident took place on Saturday when hydrogen-filled balloons came into contact with fire poppers, causing them to explode. Both officials suffered burn injuries and were subsequently airlifted to Kathmandu for treatment at Burn Hospital in Kirtipur.

Balloon Explosion Details

The explosion occurred as balloons, intended for release, accidentally touched fire poppers. This led to a sudden blast during the event marking the start of Pokhara Visit Year 2025. According to police reports, the unexpected contact between the balloons and fire poppers was the cause of the explosion.

Bhuwan KC, who serves as the press advisor to Minister Paudel, provided details about their injuries. "Paudel suffered burns on his hand and face, while Mayor Acharya also sustained more severe injuries," he stated. The severity of their injuries necessitated immediate medical attention.

Medical Response and Treatment

Following the incident, both Paudel and Acharya were quickly transported by air to Kathmandu. They were admitted to Burn Hospital in Kirtipur for further medical care. The swift response ensured they received necessary treatment without delay.

The event was meant to promote tourism in Pokhara but was overshadowed by this unfortunate accident. Authorities are likely to review safety protocols for future events to prevent similar occurrences.
