Mozambique Sees Deadly Violence Following Election Court Ruling Confirming Frelimo's Daniel Chapo as Winner

Following Mozambique's highest court confirmation of Daniel Chapo as the presidential election winner, violence erupted, resulting in at least 21 deaths, including two police officers. The unrest began after the court's announcement on Monday, sparking a wave of violence and looting led by supporters of losing candidate Venancio Mondlane. Mondlane had secured 24% of the vote, while Chapo received 65%.

Violence Erupts in Mozambique After Election Ruling

Interior Minister Pascoal Ronda reported that in the past 24 hours, there were 236 violent incidents nationwide. These incidents resulted in 21 fatalities and injuries to 13 civilians and 12 police officers. Additionally, 25 vehicles were set ablaze, including two belonging to the police. Eleven police subunits and a penitentiary were attacked and vandalised, leading to the escape of 86 inmates.

Post-Election Violence Intensifies

The country has been tense since the October 9 elections. Tensions escalated with violent protests erupting immediately after the Constitutional Council's ruling. Protesters were seen burning and looting shops in Maputo and Beira, with some city officials reportedly fleeing Beira. The violence has already claimed over 150 lives since the initial election results were released.

Mondlane's supporters, primarily young people, have taken to the streets in protest. Security forces have responded with gunfire. Mondlane has called for a "shutdown" starting Friday, but unrest continues to grip the capital as of Tuesday night.

Impact on Mozambique's Stability

The violence has severely impacted Mozambique's stability, a nation of 34 million people. The unrest reflects deep political divisions following the disputed election results. Authorities are struggling to restore order amid widespread chaos and destruction.

Footage circulating on social media shows the extent of the damage caused by protesters. The government faces mounting pressure to address the grievances of Mondlane's supporters while maintaining law and order.

The situation remains volatile as authorities work to contain further violence and restore peace in affected areas. The international community is closely monitoring developments in Mozambique as tensions continue to simmer.
