Moroccan Journalist Hamid Mahdaoui Sentenced to 1.5 Years for Defaming Politician Abdellatif Ouahbi

A Moroccan journalist, Hamid Mahdaoui, has been sentenced to 1.5 years in prison and fined $150,000 for defamation. This follows his accusations against Justice Minister Abdellatif Ouahbi of corruption and fraud. The case has drawn international criticism from press freedom advocates. Mahdaoui's lawyer, Mohamed Hedach, confirmed the sentence on Monday.

Moroccan Journalist Receives 1.5-Year Sentence

Mahdaoui, who leads Badil.info, faced prosecution after posting a video accusing Ouahbi of misconduct. The justice minister denied these allegations. The controversy arose after the Party of Authenticity and Modernity, led by Ouahbi, was linked to a drug trafficking scandal involving a Malian drug dealer last year.

International Criticism and Press Freedom Concerns

The case has attracted global attention due to Mahdaoui being prosecuted under Morocco's penal code instead of the press code. Khaled Drareni from Reporters Without Borders criticised this approach in October, describing it as an attempt to intimidate and silence journalists. This sentiment reflects broader concerns about press freedom in Morocco.

In 2017, Mahdaoui was imprisoned for three years for failing to report information about arms being sent to protesters. He claimed he did not take the information seriously at the time. His support for activists protesting social and economic issues also contributed to his previous imprisonment.

Recent Developments in Moroccan Journalism

Morocco has faced scrutiny for its treatment of journalists and activists critical of the government. In July, King Mohammed VI pardoned three prominent journalists: Omar Radi, Taoufik Bouachrine, and Soulaimane Raissouni. This move was seen as a gesture towards improving press freedom in the country.

Hedach mentioned that Mahdaoui has not yet decided whether to appeal the recent verdict. The outcome of this case could have significant implications for journalism in Morocco and the broader region.

The situation highlights ongoing challenges faced by journalists in Morocco. The international community continues to monitor developments closely, advocating for greater press freedom and protection for journalists.
