Missing Indian Sikh Student, Last Seen After Night Out, Found Dead In London Lake

Gurashman Singh Bhatia, an Indian student who had gone missing, was found dead in a lake located in the Canary Wharf area of east London. The Metropolitan Police in the UK had issued an appeal for information to reconstruct Bhatia's final movements. The 23-year-old had been reported missing following a night out with friends on December 14.

Police undertook extensive investigative measures, including reviewing CCTV footage, interviewing witnesses, and examining phone and financial records. Water searches were conducted in the vicinity, leading to the recovery of a body believed to be Bhatia's by police divers in the South Quay waters.

While there were no initial signs of suspicion surrounding Gurashman's death, Detective Chief Superintendent James Conway emphasized the need for a thorough investigation to confirm this. The police released a CCTV image of Gurashman taken before his disappearance, urging anyone who might have seen him in the Marsh Wall area on the evening of December 14 or early hours of December 15 to come forward.

DCI Conway expressed deep condolences to Gurashman's family and friends, acknowledging the tragic outcome of their missing person inquiry. Although formal identification was pending, the family had been notified, and individuals with relevant information were urged to contact the authorities.

The Indian student community in the UK had launched extensive social media appeals following Bhatia's disappearance. Sanam Arora, Chair of the National Indian Students and Alumni Union (NISAU) UK, lamented the loss and extended condolences to the family and friends, urging prayers for Gurashman's soul.

BJP leader Manjinder Singh Sirsa had flagged Bhatia's case with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar.

"Deeply saddened to hear about the passing of GS Bhatia, a Loughborough University student who was missing since Dec 15th. Our thoughts are with the family and friends during this difficult time. May Waheguru give strength to his parents mourning this profound loss," Sirsa said in a social media post.
