Militants Target Foreign Diplomat Convoy in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Resulting in Policeman's Death

A convoy carrying foreign diplomats was targeted by an explosion in Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. The attack resulted in the death of a policeman and injuries to three others. The diplomats, representing 11 countries, were unharmed, according to the Pakistan Foreign Ministry. The incident took place in the Jehanabad area of Swat district as the convoy was en route to Malam Jabba.

The diplomats were from Russia, Vietnam, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Zimbabwe, Indonesia, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, and Portugal. Hospital officials reported that the injured policemen are in critical condition. "All the diplomats are completely safe. The improvised explosive device targeted the convoy of police that was on security duty," stated a police official.

Security Measures and Diplomatic Visit

The diplomats were on an official visit to Swat district organized by the Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI) with the Swat Chamber of Commerce. They were headed to Malam Jabba for a night stay when the attack occurred. Following the incident, they were escorted back to Islamabad under tight security.

The Pakistan Foreign Ministry confirmed that the group returned safely to Islamabad and expressed condolences to the family of the deceased policeman. An advance scout police vehicle was hit by the IED, leading to the policeman's death. "We honour our law enforcement authorities that remain steadfast in the face of terrorists. Such acts will not deter Pakistan from its commitment towards the fight against terrorism," said the ministry.

Historical Context and Reactions

Swat district has a history of Taliban militancy, particularly during the insurgency in 2009. A significant military operation eventually drove most militants into neighbouring Afghanistan. During this period, many locals fled but returned after a five-month operation restored some stability.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur condemned the attack, stating, "We salute our brave police force for their matchless sacrifices in the war against terror. Their sacrifices would not go waste." The region remains vigilant against such threats despite past challenges.
