Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum Laughs at Trump's Proposal to Rename Gulf of Mexico

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has responded to US President Donald Trump's proposal to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the "Gulf of America." She stated that Trump can choose any name he prefers for the American portion. Sheinbaum was reviewing Trump's executive orders concerning Mexico, which stress Mexican sovereignty and dialogue. However, she found humour in the renaming suggestion.

Sheinbaum Responds to Trumps Gulf Name Change

During a press briefing, Sheinbaum displayed Trump's order titled "Restoring Names that Honour American Greatness." The order mandates that within 30 days, the US Secretary of the Interior will rename the US Continental Shelf area. This area is bordered by Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida, extending to Mexico and Cuba's seaward boundary.

Gulf of Mexico Renaming Proposal

Trump announced his intention to rename the Gulf of Mexico during his inaugural address. He reiterated this idea at a news conference earlier in the month. "A short time from now, we are going to be changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America," he declared. He later signed an Executive Order to formalise this change.

Sheinbaum remarked on Trump's statement: "He says that he will call it the Gulf of America on its continental shelf." She emphasised that for Mexico and globally, it remains the Gulf of Mexico. Her response was consistent with her previous sarcastic suggestion to rename North America as "América Mexicana" or "Mexican America."

Disagreement Over Water Bodies' Names

The naming dispute extends beyond the Gulf. Americans and Mexicans have differing names for another significant water body—the river forming the border between Texas and several Mexican states. In the US, it's known as the Rio Grande, while in Mexico, it's called the Rio Bravo.

Sheinbaum reiterated her stance: "For us and for the entire world it will continue to be called the Gulf of Mexico." Her comments highlight a broader disagreement over naming conventions between the two countries.

The renaming proposal underscores ongoing tensions between national identities and territorial claims. While Trump's order focuses on American greatness, Sheinbaum's response reflects a commitment to Mexican sovereignty and international recognition.
