Mexican President Rejects Claims of US Probe into Drug Money in Campaign
Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has vehemently denied media reports suggesting a US investigation into alleged drug trafficker contributions to his 2006 presidential campaign, labeling them as false and slanderous.
In a recent development, Mexico's President Andrés Manuel López Obrador strongly condemned media reports suggesting that the United States government initiated an abortive investigation into potential contributions from drug traffickers to his unsuccessful 2006 presidential campaign. President López Obrador swiftly interpreted these reports as a direct attack on his administration and the Morena party ahead of Mexico's crucial June 2 presidential election.

Reviving Bilateral Tensions
The controversy surrounding these reports threatens to rekindle bilateral tensions between Mexico and the United States, particularly as both nations prepare for their respective presidential elections. This situation could potentially undermine the cooperation between the two countries in combating drug trafficking, mirroring the impact caused by the 2020 arrest of former Mexican Defense Secretary Gen. Salvador Cienfuegos by US authorities.
Allegations and Lack of Concrete Evidence
The media reports in question detailed testimonies from traffickers claiming to have provided approximately USD 2 million to close associates of López Obrador during his 2006 presidential campaign, which he narrowly lost. However, it is crucial to note that no concrete evidence was found, and the investigation was subsequently dropped in 2010. Despite this, López Obrador expressed his belief that US agencies were responsible for the recent resurgence of these old allegations.
López Obrador's Response and Accusations
During his daily media briefing, President López Obrador vehemently denied the allegations, labeling them as "completely false" and "slander." While he refrained from directly accusing any specific US agency, he expressed his discontent with the US government for allegedly allowing such "immoral practices" that violate political ethics. López Obrador has a history of criticizing the actions of US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) agents in Mexico, and following the arrest of Gen. Cienfuegos, he imposed restrictions on their operations within the country.
Potential Impact on Cooperation and Violence
Mike Vigil, the former head of international operations for the DEA, expressed concerns that the latest dispute could lead to a decline in cooperation between Mexico and the United States in combating drug trafficking. Vigil warned that this situation could result in increased drug flow into the United States and escalating violence in Mexico, surpassing the challenges faced during the Cienfuegos arrest. He also suggested that López Obrador perceives these reports as a direct attack on him and as an attempt to influence the upcoming presidential campaign.
Implications for Mexico's Elections
Claudia Sheinbaum, the candidate representing López Obrador's Morena party, currently holds a significant lead in opinion polls for the June 2 election. However, Mexico's persistent high rates of violence and Sheinbaum's commitment to continuing López Obrador's policy of non-confrontation with drug cartels present vulnerabilities for the governing party.
Simultaneous Publication of Reports Raises Suspicions
The fact that three separate media outlets published stories about the alleged investigation almost simultaneously on Tuesday raised suspicions among López Obrador and his supporters. They believe that a powerful entity may be behind this wave of negative press. Guadalupe Correa-Cabrera, an associate professor at George Mason University, suggested that the timing of the publications led some in Mexico to suspect that a US official leaked the information to reporters.
Historical Scrutiny of López Obrador's Campaigns
López Obrador has faced scrutiny in the past regarding the financing of his three presidential campaigns in 2006, 2012, and 2018, which he ultimately won. Campaign operators associated with him have been captured on video receiving substantial amounts of cash, but there is no evidence to suggest that he was aware of these transactions. However, Correa-Cabrera notes that many other politicians in Mexico have been embroiled in campaign finance scandals.
Potential Impact on US Elections
Beyond the concerns about the impact on Mexico's elections, Correa-Cabrera suggests that these reports could also influence the 2024 US elections. She highlights the public attacks by Republicans and their proposals to declare war on cartels, suggesting that the current situation could be exploited by Republican politicians to portray Mexico as a narco state and justify military intervention.
Lingering Resentment over Cienfuegos Arrest
President López Obrador already harbored resentment towards perceived American interference, particularly in the arrest of former Defense Secretary Gen. Cienfuegos. He alleged that the DEA orchestrated the arrest to weaken Mexico's armed forces and grant US agents greater freedom within the country. The arrest led to diplomatic tensions, with Mexico demanding Cienfuegos' release and threatening to expel US agents if he was not returned. Ultimately, the United States dropped the charges and repatriated him, prompting Mexico to absolve Cienfuegos of any wrongdoing and impose restrictions on US agents' activities in Mexico.
