Facebook News Tab to Be Discontinued as Meta Reduces News Content
Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has announced it will be discontinuing Facebook News in the United States and Australia starting early April. This move follows the feature's cessation in the United Kingdom, France, and Germany last year. Introduced in 2019, Facebook News offered a selection of headlines from both major global news outlets and smaller local publishers. Despite this shift, Meta assures that users will retain the ability to access news article links and that news organizations can continue to share and promote their content on the platform.

The decision to phase out Facebook News is part of Meta's broader strategy to reduce the presence of news and political content on its platforms. This approach is a response to ongoing critiques regarding the company's handling of misinformation and its potential role in fostering political division. According to Meta spokesperson Dani Lever, this adjustment will not affect the posts from followed accounts but will influence system-generated recommendations, which users can manage according to their preferences.
Meta emphasizes that this change will not compromise its commitment to combating misinformation through its fact-checking network. However, concerns about misinformation persist, especially with significant elections approaching in the United States. The company's struggle with political content has been a point of contention, as noted by Sarah Kreps of Cornell University's Tech Policy Institute. She highlights how Facebook's expansion into politics was unforeseen by its tech-centric founders, making its recent steps away from political content understandable.
Rick Edmonds from Poynter points out that the discontinuation of Facebook News might not be surprising for news organizations that have observed a decline in traffic from Facebook over recent years. This trend has prompted these organizations to explore alternative audience engagement methods such as search optimization and newsletters. Despite news constituting less than 3% of global user feeds on Facebook, social media remains a significant news source for many, with a 2023 Pew Research study revealing that half of US adults occasionally receive news via social media platforms.
The study further indicates that Facebook is a primary news source for 30% of US adults, while Instagram, also owned by Meta, serves as a regular news source for 16% of the population. Recent changes on Instagram regarding political content recommendations have also sparked user dissatisfaction. Although users have always had the option to disable these recommendations, many were unaware of this possibility until recently.
This series of adjustments by Meta reflects an ongoing effort to recalibrate its platforms' relationship with news and political content. As these changes unfold, both users and news organizations are navigating the evolving landscape of social media's role in information dissemination.
