Meta Faces Summons In India Over Mark Zuckerberg's Election Misinformation Claim
Tech giant Meta is set to be summoned by India's Parliamentary Standing Committee on Communication and Information Technology over a controversial remark made by its CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, regarding the 2024 Indian general election. BJP MP Nishikant Dubey, who chairs the committee, accused Meta of spreading misinformation and asserted that the company must apologize to the Indian Parliament and the people.

Zuckerberg's Controversial Statement on India's Elections
During a podcast on January 10, Zuckerberg, while discussing the global political landscape post-COVID, inaccurately claimed that incumbent governments, including India's, had lost power in 2024. "2024 was a very big election year around the world, and all these countries, including India, had elections. The incumbents basically lost every single one," he remarked, linking the trend to economic policies and government responses to the pandemic.
However, this statement was factually incorrect. While Prime Minister Narendra Modi's BJP faced electoral setbacks compared to its previous performances, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) still secured a majority and retained power.
Indian Government's Sharp Response
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw was quick to fact-check Zuckerberg's claim. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), he highlighted that India, the world's largest democracy, witnessed a historic election with over 640 million voters reaffirming their trust in the NDA under Modi's leadership.
"Mr. Zuckerberg's claim that most incumbent governments, including India, lost post-COVID is factually incorrect," Vaishnaw stated, pointing to Modi's third-term victory as a testament to public trust and good governance.
He further underscored India's robust handling of the pandemic, citing initiatives such as providing free food to 800 million people, administering 2.2 billion vaccines, and extending global aid. Expressing disappointment over Zuckerberg's misrepresentation, he urged Meta to uphold factual accuracy and credibility.
BJP's Performance in the 2024 Elections
Although the BJP did not secure an outright majority as in 2014 and 2019, the NDA coalition comfortably crossed the majority mark, ensuring Modi's continued leadership. Despite some losses, the overall verdict reaffirmed public confidence in the ruling alliance.
What's Next for Meta?
With the Parliamentary Committee gearing up to summon Meta, the tech company could face serious scrutiny over its role in disseminating misinformation. If called upon, Meta may be required to clarify its stance and issue a public apology to the Indian government and its citizens.
As global discourse around misinformation and accountability in digital spaces intensifies, this episode underscores the growing friction between big tech and political establishments worldwide.
