Macron Supports Fast-Track French Citizenship for Telegram's Durov Despite Charges

French President Emmanuel Macron has justified his decision to grant expedited citizenship to Telegram CEO Pavel Durov, who now faces preliminary charges in France for alleged criminal activities on his platform. Macron stated on Thursday that he was unaware of Durov's arrival in France before his unexpected arrest over the weekend and had no plans to meet him.

Macron Backs Telegram CEOs Citizenship

Durov's lawyer, David-Olivier Kaminski, told French media, "It's totally absurd to think that the person in charge of a social network could be implicated in criminal acts that don't concern him, directly or indirectly." This case has highlighted the difficulties in regulating illegal activities online and has drawn attention to Durov's unique background and multiple citizenships.

Support for Freedom of Expression

During a news conference in Serbia, Macron emphasized France's support for freedom of expression and entrepreneurial liberty. He defended the decision to approve Durov's request for French nationality, likening it to granting citizenship to high-profile sports stars and performers who contribute to France's wealth and learn French. Macron mentioned that Snapchat CEO Evan Spiegel also received French citizenship through a special process for merited foreigners.

Free-speech advocates, far-right figures, and authoritarian governments worldwide have criticized French authorities over Durov's case. Durov was released on €5 million bail but is prohibited from leaving France and must report to a police station twice a week while the investigation continues.

Allegations Against Durov

French prosecutors accuse Durov of complicity in enabling drug trafficking and the sharing of child sexual images on Telegram. They also allege that he refused to cooperate with authorities investigating illegal activities on the app. The case underscores the challenges faced by law enforcement in policing illegal activities online.

Le Canard Enchaine, a French satirical and investigative newspaper, reported that Durov informed police upon his arrest that he intended to meet Macron. However, Macron denied this claim, stating, "I was absolutely not aware of Mr. Durov's arrival in France," adding that his arrest was an independent act of French justice.

The situation has sparked debate about the responsibilities of social media platforms in preventing illegal activities and the extent to which their executives can be held accountable. The outcome of this case may have significant implications for how online platforms are regulated in the future.
