Lukashenkos Controversial Meeting with Ukrainian Children Draws Ire
Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenkos attendance at a meeting with children brought from Russia-controlled Ukraine regions ignites international outrage, raising concerns over Belaruss role in Moscows deportation of Ukrainian children.
In a defiant move that has sparked international outrage, Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko attended a government-organized meeting with children brought from Russia-controlled areas of Ukraine. The event, held ahead of the New Year holiday, marked the arrival of a new group of Ukrainian children in Belarus.

Lukashenko Vows to Embrace and Support Ukrainian Children
Speaking at the event, President Lukashenko pledged to provide care and support for the Ukrainian children. He stated, "We will embrace these children, bring them to our home, keep them warm, and make their childhood happier." However, Belarusian officials did not disclose the exact number of Ukrainian children brought into the country.
Study Reveals Extensive Transfer of Ukrainian Children to Belarus
A recent study conducted by Yale University revealed that over 2,400 Ukrainian children aged 6-17 have been brought to Belarus from four Ukrainian regions partially occupied by Russian forces. This concerning finding highlights the scale of the alleged unlawful transfer of children.
Belarusian Opposition Calls for ICC Investigation
The Belarusian opposition, represented by former culture minister turned opposition activist Pavel Latushka, has urged the International Criminal Court (ICC) to hold Lukashenko and his officials accountable for their involvement in the illegal transfer of Ukrainian children. Latushka presented evidence to the ICC, emphasizing the need for an investigation into these alleged crimes.
ICC Arrest Warrants for Putin and Russian Officials
In March, the ICC issued arrest warrants for Russian President Vladimir Putin and his children's rights commissioner, Maria Lvova-Belova. The charges against them include war crimes related to the unlawful deportation and transfer of children from occupied areas of Ukraine to Russia. Moscow has vehemently denied these allegations.
Ukrainian Ombudsman Raises Concerns about Information Cover-Up
Ukraine's human rights ombudsman, Dmytro Lubinets, expressed concerns that the transfer of thousands of Ukrainian children to Belarus is part of a deliberate attempt by Moscow to conceal information about the unlawful deportation of children.
International Red Cross Chapter Suspended
Earlier this month, the International Red Cross suspended its Belarusian chapter after its chief, Dzmitry Shautsou, sparked international outrage by boasting about actively transporting Ukrainian children from Russian-controlled areas to Belarus. Shautsou dismissed the suspension as "absolutely politicized" and claimed that Ukrainian children who visited Belarus for "health improvement" returned home safely.
Belarus' Role as Russia's Ally
Belarus has been a staunch ally of Russia since the invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022. Lukashenko allowed the Kremlin to use Belarusian territory for the invasion, and Russia has deployed tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus.
The attendance of Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko at a meeting with Ukrainian children from Russia-controlled areas has drawn international criticism and raised concerns about the well-being and safety of these children. The involvement of Belarus in the alleged unlawful transfer of Ukrainian children has prompted calls for accountability and investigations by international organizations.
