Two juveniles have been charged with crimes related to the shooting that occurred during the Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl rally on Wednesday, February 15, 2023. The Jackson County Family Court announced that the juveniles are currently being held in the county's Juvenile Detention Center on gun-related and resisting arrest charges. Additional charges are anticipated as the investigation by the Kansas City Police Department continues.

Tragic Shooting at Chiefs Celebration
The incident resulted in the unfortunate death of a mother of two and left 22 individuals injured. The shooting took place amid a large gathering of fans who had assembled outside Union Station following a parade through the city. Police Chief Stacey Graves revealed that the victims ranged in age from 8 to 47, with half of them being under the age of 16.
Police Response and Investigation
Initially, three juveniles were detained by the police, but one was later released after being determined not to be involved in the shooting. The authorities are actively searching for other potential individuals involved and are urging witnesses, victims, and anyone with cellphone footage of the incident to come forward and provide information through a dedicated hotline.
Mayor's Perspective and Public Safety Concerns
Despite the presence of over 800 police officers in the vicinity, including on top of nearby structures, the shooting occurred outside Union Station. Mayor Quinton Lucas, who was present with his family at the event, expressed his shock and sadness but emphasized that he does not intend to cancel the upcoming St. Patrick's Day parade. He acknowledged the public safety challenges associated with such events but believes they should continue.
Parade Atmosphere and Chaos
The celebration marked the third parade since 2020, and previous events had been peaceful. The parade route was packed with enthusiastic fans, some climbing trees and street poles for a better view. Players rode on double-decker buses, accompanied by DJs and drummers. However, the joyous atmosphere was shattered when gunshots erupted just as the rally was concluding.
Heroic Intervention by Bystander
Amid the chaos, Trey Filter, a 40-year-old man from outside Wichita, Kansas, emerged as a hero. While walking to his car with his family, he heard shouts of "get him" and witnessed a fleeing person. Filter, along with another bystander, attempted to tackle the individual. He eventually managed to jump on top of the person, unaware of the danger he was putting himself in. Filter's wife, Casey Filter, picked up a gun that had fallen nearby.
Comfort and Support for Victims
The slain woman was identified as Lisa Lopez-Galvan, a beloved host of the radio show "Taste of Tejano." She was known for her outgoing personality and dedication to her family. Friends and colleagues described her as a prominent figure in the local Latino community. Taylor Swift, who is in a relationship with Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, generously donated USD 100,000 to Lopez-Galvan's family through GoFundMe campaigns.
Addressing Gun Violence in Kansas City
Kansas City has been grappling with the issue of gun violence for some time. In 2020, it was among nine cities targeted by the US Justice Department in an effort to combat violent crime. The city experienced a record-matching 182 homicides in 2023, with most involving firearms. Mayor Lucas has joined other mayors across the country in advocating for new laws to reduce gun violence, including mandating universal background checks.
