Kamala Harris Gains Momentum with Key Democratic Endorsements for 2024

Vice President Kamala Harris swiftly moved to secure Democratic delegates for her presidential campaign after President Joe Biden stepped aside. Biden's exit on Sunday, driven by concerns over his ability to defeat Republican Donald Trump, marked a significant shift in the 2024 presidential race. This decision prompted a rapid alignment of Democratic leaders and organisations behind Harris.

Harris Secures Key 2024 Endorsements

Biden's departure has freed his delegates to support any candidate they choose. Harris, endorsed by Biden, is currently the only declared candidate and is working to secure endorsements from a majority of delegates. On Monday, she received endorsements from Maryland Gov. Wes Moore, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker, and Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear.

Endorsements and Support

Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi, initially advocating for a primary to strengthen the nominee, endorsed Harris on Monday. Pelosi expressed her "enthusiastic support" for Harris's effort to lead the party. More than 700 pledged delegates have indicated their support for Harris at the convention, which is over one-third of the 1,976 pledged delegates needed to clinch the nomination.

Harris spent much of Sunday making over 100 calls to Democratic officials to garner support for her candidacy. A person familiar with the matter stated that she aimed to move past the intraparty drama following Biden's June 27 debate with Trump. Speaking to party leaders, Harris expressed gratitude for Biden's endorsement but emphasised her desire to earn the nomination independently.

Political Strategy and Campaign Efforts

On Sunday afternoon, Biden's campaign was rebranded as "Harris for President," reflecting her inheritance of his political operation, which includes over 1,000 staffers and nearly $96 million in funds as of June's end. By Monday morning, campaign spokesperson Lauren Hitt announced that Harris had raised $49.6 million in donations within 15 hours of Biden's endorsement.

Harris quickly secured endorsements from influential caucuses and political organisations such as the AAPI Victory Fund, The Collective PAC, and the Latino Victory Fund. She also received backing from the chairs of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, Congressional Hispanic Caucus, and the entire Congressional Black Caucus.

Challenges Ahead

Winning the nomination is just one challenge for Harris following Biden's decision to exit the race. If successful in securing the nomination, she must select a running mate and pivot her political operation towards boosting her candidacy with just over 100 days until Election Day.

Notably, potential running mates like Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper, and Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly quickly endorsed Harris. Aides confirmed that Harris spoke with Shapiro and Cooper on Sunday afternoon. Cooper's spokeswoman Sadie Weiner stated that he backed Harris as the Democratic nominee during their brief call.

Former President Barack Obama has not yet endorsed Harris immediately but pledged his support behind the eventual party nominee. West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin also announced he would not be a candidate after considering re-registering as a Democrat to vie against Harris.

Public Appearances and Statements

Harris made her first public appearance on Monday at the White House, addressing National Collegiate Athletic Association championship teams and praising Biden's "unmatched" legacy while expressing gratitude for his service. She later travelled to Wilmington to meet with her new campaign staff.

In a statement, Harris praised Biden's "selfless and patriotic act" of stepping aside and expressed her intention to "earn and win" her party's nomination. She stated, "I will do everything in my power to unite the Democratic Party — and unite our nation — to defeat Donald Trump and his extreme Project 2025 agenda."

Biden plans to discuss his decision later this week in an address to the nation. He posted on X (formerly Twitter), "I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term."

Convention Plans

The Democratic National Convention is scheduled for August 19-22 in Chicago but will hold a virtual roll call before in-person proceedings begin. The conventions rules committee will meet this week to finalise its nomination process amid Biden's exit.

Congressional Hispanic Caucus chairwoman Nanette Barragan spoke with Harris on Sunday about preferring a regular order nomination process over a virtual roll call. Democratic National Committee chair Jaime Harrison stated that the party would "undertake a transparent and orderly process" to select a candidate capable of defeating Donald Trump in November.

Biden endorsed Harris shortly after announcing his withdrawal from the race, urging Democrats on X: "Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year... Democrats — it's time to come together and beat Trump."
