Jallikattu Goes Global: Sri Lanka Hosts Event On Jan 6!

This year, the traditional bull-taming sport of Tamil Nadu, Jallikattu, is set to go international as the jallikattu event will be hosted for the first time in Sri Lanka at Triconamalee on January 6, Saturday. All the arrangements for the event are being made by Senthil Thonadaman, Governor of Eastern Province, Sri Lanka, who has his roots in Tamil Nadu's Sivagangai district, reported ANI.

Jallikattu Event in Sri Lanka: All you need to know

1. As part of the week-long Pongal celebrations, the Jallikattu event is scheduled to be held in Sri Lanka.

2. The Jallikattu will take place on January 6, under the leadership of Sri Lankan Eastern Province Governor Senthil Thondaman.

3. The event is set to commence at 10 am in the Trincomalee, Sampur area, and will feature the participation of 200 bulls and over 100 bull tamers.

4. Senthil Thondaman, an avid Jallikattu enthusiast, who also owns approximately 15 Jallikattu bulls in Tamil Nadu, announced the event during his visit to Trincomalee.

5. The necessary permissions from the Sri Lankan government have been obtained to facilitate the Jallikattu event in Sri Lanka.

6. Senthil Thondaman had expressed his intention to organize Jallikattu in Sri Lanka, and now, all preparations are in place for the event.

7. Jallikattu is a traditional bull-embracing sport usually played in Tamil Nadu during the Pongal harvest festival in January.

8. The sport involves releasing over 1,000 trained bulls one by one from a closed space known as 'vadi vassal,' and bull tamers attempt to wrap their arms or hands around the bull's hump to win the award.

9. Only one person is allowed to attempt at a time during this traditional and popular sport, especially in the South districts of Tamil Nadu, particularly in Madurai.
