Jaishankar's Visit to Germany Strengthens India-Germany Strategic Partnership Amid Celebrations

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar recently visited Germany, engaging in comprehensive discussions with German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul. The talks covered a wide range of bilateral cooperation areas, with both nations reaffirming their commitment to expanding collaboration in strategic fields like defence and artificial intelligence.

Jaishankar Enhances India-Germany Ties

The Ministry of External Affairs highlighted the significance of Jaishankar's visit, which took place from May 22-24, shortly after Germany's new government was formed. This timing underscores the importance both countries place on their bilateral relationship. The visit also marked 25 years of the India-Germany Strategic Partnership, injecting fresh momentum into their ties.

Strengthening Strategic Partnerships

During his visit, Jaishankar met Chancellor Friedrich Merz, conveying Prime Minister Narendra Modi's greetings to the new German government. Chancellor Merz expressed strong support for deepening the multifaceted India-Germany Strategic Partnership across various sectors. Jaishankar also appreciated Germany's solidarity with India in combating terrorism.

Jaishankar's discussions with Foreign Minister Wadephul were extensive, covering all aspects of bilateral cooperation. Both sides reiterated their shared commitment to enhancing collaboration in key strategic areas such as defence, digital technologies, AI, green development, and talent mobility.

Focus on Economic and Technological Cooperation

The external affairs minister also met Katherina Reiche, Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy, focusing on strengthening trade and investment ties between India and Germany as well as the EU. They discussed progress in the Green and Sustainable Development Partnership, particularly in green hydrogen and infrastructure sectors.

In addition to these meetings, Jaishankar engaged with members of the German Parliament and foreign policy experts. These interactions aimed at advancing political dialogue and strengthening economic and technological cooperation while exchanging views on global and regional developments.

Engagements with Thought Leaders

Jaishankar participated in a high-level think-tank dialogue at the DGAP German Council on Foreign Relations. He engaged with thought leaders and experts on foreign and security policy to advance the India-Germany strategic partnership in promoting global security and stability.

The ministers launched an official logo commemorating the 25th anniversary of their Strategic Partnership. They exchanged perspectives on regional and global developments, reaffirming their shared stance on combating terrorism without exception and promoting a multipolar international order based on rules.

Commitment to Defence Cooperation

Productive discussions were held with Günter Sautter, Foreign and Security Policy Advisor to the Federal Chancellor. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening strategic cooperation in areas like cyber security, Indo-Pacific affairs, and defence industrial collaboration.

Jaishankar chaired a regional Heads of Missions Conference involving India's Ambassadors/High Commissioners in European countries. This conference focused on advancing India's diplomatic engagements across Europe.

The visit underscored Germany's role as a strong advocate for enhancing India-EU ties, including expediting the conclusion of a Free Trade Agreement (FTA). The interactions during this visit have set a positive tone for future collaborations between India and Germany.
