Israeli Airstrike Destroys Lebanese Mosque; Third UN Peacekeeper Injured

The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah has intensified dramatically since the outbreak of all-out war on September 23, with recent airstrikes escalating tensions further.

In a notable incident early Sunday, an Israeli airstrike completely destroyed an old mosque in the southern village of Kfar Tibnit, as reported by Lebanon's state-run National News Agency (NNA).

Destruction of Cultural Heritage

The airstrike occurred around 3:45 AM local time, targeting a mosque that held significant cultural value for the community. Village mayor Fuad Yassin lamented the loss, stating, "It was a significant place because families used to gather in the square right next to it on special occasions." The mosque, which was at least 100 years old, served as a communal gathering spot for the local residents.

Increased Hostilities and Civilian Casualties

This attack comes amidst ongoing clashes between Hezbollah and Israeli forces, particularly in the southern region. The Israeli military campaign against Hezbollah has seen a continuous uptick in violence, with both sides engaged in fierce confrontations. The Lebanese Red Cross reported that its paramedics were injured while responding to a previous attack, highlighting the perilous conditions on the ground. The Red Cross noted, "As the team was searching for casualties to rescue, the house was hit for a second time, resulting in concussions to the volunteers and damage to the two ambulances."

UN Peacekeepers Under Threat

In a further escalation, the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) reported that a third peacekeeper was wounded due to Israeli strikes, underscoring the growing danger for international peacekeeping efforts in the region. This peacekeeper, who underwent surgery following gunfire on Friday, is reportedly in stable condition. Earlier in the week, two other UNIFIL peacekeepers were injured when an Israeli strike targeted a UN watchtower in Naqoura, a coastal town in southern Lebanon.

International Reactions and Evacuations

Israel's military actions have drawn criticism from several countries. France summoned the Israeli ambassador in response to the strikes, while Italy and Spain condemned the actions as "unjustifiable." U.S. President Joe Biden also urged Israel to exercise caution to avoid harming UN forces. Russia has called for an end to what it termed "hostile actions" against peacekeeping personnel.

In response to the escalating conflict, Israel has issued evacuation orders to residents in 23 southern Lebanese villages, advising them to relocate north of the Awali River. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) allege that Hezbollah is using these areas for weapon concealment and attack staging, a claim the militant group has denied.

Humanitarian Impact

The conflict has had a devastating impact on the civilian population, displacing over 1.2 million people in Lebanon. Official figures indicate that more than 2,100 individuals have lost their lives since the outbreak of fighting, with over 10,000 others reported injured. As the situation remains volatile, the international community is closely monitoring developments and calling for restraint from all parties involved.
