Israel Engages Allies to Secure Release of Elizabeth Tsurkov from Iraq
An Israeli-Russian researcher, Elizabeth Tsurkov, is believed to have been kidnapped in Iraq nearly two years ago. The Israeli government is now collaborating with allies to secure her release. This week, special envoys for hostage affairs gathered in Jerusalem to discuss the situation. They met with Tsurkov's family and urged representatives from the US, UK, Germany, Austria, and Canada to engage their embassies in Baghdad to lobby the Iraqi government for negotiations.

Israel and Iraq lack diplomatic ties, complicating efforts to secure Tsurkov's freedom. The Israeli official expressed hope that other nations would offer assistance. "We are counting on our allies," the official stated, requesting anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the discussions. "And I hope that other nations will suggest assistance in helping us release Elizabeth. Many nations have embassies and contacts with the Iraqi government."
Efforts Amid Regional Changes
Elizabeth Tsurkov vanished in Baghdad in March 2023 while conducting research for her doctorate at Princeton University. She had entered Iraq using her Russian passport. The only indication of her being alive was a video aired in November 2023 on an Iraqi TV station and shared on pro-Iranian social media platforms, allegedly showing her.
No group has claimed responsibility for Tsurkov's abduction. However, Israel suspects Kataib Hezbollah, an Iranian-backed Iraqi militia with alleged ties to the Iraqi government, is holding her. The Israeli official mentioned that after months of secretive efforts, recent regional changes present an opportunity to publicly advocate for her release.
Regional Dynamics and Diplomatic Efforts
Over the past 15 months of conflict, Israel has targeted Iran and its allies, leading to a reduction in Iran's regional influence. Additionally, Iraq seems to have pressured militia groups to cease aerial attacks against Israel. These developments may create a conducive environment for negotiations regarding Tsurkov's release.
The Israeli government remains hopeful that international cooperation will lead to progress in securing Tsurkov's freedom. The involvement of multiple countries with diplomatic presence in Iraq is seen as crucial in facilitating dialogue with the Iraqi authorities.
The situation underscores the complexities of international diplomacy when dealing with hostage situations involving countries without formal relations. The Israeli official emphasized the importance of allied support and diplomatic channels in navigating these challenges.
