Israel-Palestine War: Death Toll Crosses 3,000, Gaza Border Finally Sealed

The Israel Defense Forces announced on Tuesday morning that they had successfully regained control over their previously breached border with the Gaza Strip. This came approximately 72 hours after Hamas militants breached sections of the barrier and launched an incursion, resulting in the abduction or killing of more than 1,000 Israeli citizens.

As Israel continued to grapple with the emerging enormity of Saturday's massacres and the military was formally notifying hostages' families that their loved ones were being held in Gaza, air force planes bombarded wide swaths of the Strip. The toll of casualties in the continuing conflict between Israel and Hamas has exceeded 3,000. This includes over 1,000 fatalities and 2,700 injuries in Israel, and at least 900 fatalities and 4,250 injuries in Gaza, as reported by both Palestinian and Israeli health services.

Israel also claims that Hamas and other militant groups in Gaza are holding over 150 hostages, including both soldiers and civilians.

Humanitarian organisations issued urgent pleas for the establishment of safe corridors to deliver essential aid into Gaza. They emphasized that overwhelmed hospitals were running critically low on supplies. Israel had previously halted the flow of food, fuel, and medicines into Gaza, and the last access point from Egypt ceased operation after airstrikes struck near the border crossing on Tuesday.

Israeli authorities have not publicly disclosed specific details regarding the number or identities of the kidnapped individuals. However, military officials have stated that the victims include elderly people and children, most of whom were seized from small Israeli border towns on Saturday morning.

Preliminary assessments, as shared by a senior Israeli military official, suggest that at least 150 Israelis were taken hostage by Palestinian assailants. President Biden on Tuesday that there are Americans among hostages taken by Hamas as part of the militant group's attack on Israel. "We now know that American citizens are among those being held by Hamas," he said. Officials from France and several other countries are also investigating reports that their citizens may have been captured.

According to reports, the large-scale hostage-taking implies that Hamas may intend to use them as leverage for a potential prisoner exchange and possibly as human shields when Israel retaliates in Gaza. This situation is unfolding rapidly, and developments are expected.
