Israel Mulls Next Moves After Gaza Talks

Israeli officials will meet to discuss the next steps after talks with the US, Egypt, and Qatar about a deal to pause the fighting in Gaza. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced plans to convene the Cabinet to approve operational plans for action in Rafah, despite international warnings against a ground operation.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that Israeli officials will convene on Saturday night to discuss the next steps following the latest round of talks with the United States, Egypt, and Qatar aimed at finding a solution to the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Despite international warnings against a military ground operation in Rafah, Netanyahu stated that the Cabinet will meet early next week to approve operational plans for action in the city, including the evacuation of civilians.

Mediators Await Israel's Response to Draft Deal

A senior Egyptian official, acting as a mediator between Israel and Hamas, revealed that mediators are awaiting Israel's official response to a proposed draft deal. The deal includes the release of up to 40 women and older hostages held in Gaza in exchange for the release of 300 Palestinian prisoners held by Israel, primarily women, minors, and older individuals. The proposed six-week pause in fighting would also allow hundreds of aid trucks to enter Gaza daily, including the northern part of the besieged territory. Both sides have agreed to continue negotiations during the pause to secure further releases and a permanent ceasefire.

Hamas Rejects Israeli Proposals

Hamas political official Osama Hamdan asserted that the group was not present at the talks and claimed that Israel had refused their primary demands, including an end to the aggression and withdrawal from Gaza. Meanwhile, the Health Ministry in Hamas-ruled Gaza reported that 92 Palestinians were killed in Israeli bombardments over the past 24 hours, bringing the total death toll in nearly five months of conflict to 29,606. The number of wounded individuals has risen to approximately 70,000.

Brazil's President Accuses Israel of Genocide

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva sparked controversy by alleging that Israel is committing genocide against Palestinians. This follows his previous comparison of Israel's military offensive in Gaza to the Nazi Holocaust. Israel has vehemently denied these claims, emphasizing that its military operations target the militant group Hamas and not the Palestinian people. In response to Lula's initial comments, Israel declared him a persona non grata, summoned Brazil's ambassador, and demanded an apology. Brazil subsequently recalled its ambassador to Israel for consultations.

South Africa's Landmark Case and Israel's Accusation of Hypocrisy

Last month, South Africa filed a landmark case with the International Court of Justice, accusing Israel of genocide against Palestinians. The court issued a preliminary order requiring Israel to take all necessary measures to prevent death, destruction, and any acts of genocide in Gaza. Israel, established as a refuge for Holocaust survivors, has accused South Africa of hypocrisy, drawing parallels between Israel's treatment of Palestinians and the treatment of Black South Africans during apartheid.

Worsening Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza

The ongoing conflict has resulted in a worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Hunger and infectious diseases are spreading rapidly, and approximately 80% of Gaza's 2.3 million population has been displaced. Over 1.4 million people are crowded into Rafah, near the border with Egypt, facing severe overcrowding, lack of sanitation, and skyrocketing prices. Protests have erupted in northern Gaza, with children demanding more aid to the region.

Netanyahu's Vow and Domestic Pressure

Despite international pressure for a ceasefire, Netanyahu remains committed to achieving "total victory." However, he faces domestic pressure, with anti-government protests taking place in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. Police used water cannons to disperse protesters in Tel Aviv, resulting in the arrest of 18 individuals.
