Iran Restores Access to WhatsApp and Google Play After Two-Year Ban Amid Protests
The Iranian government has announced the lifting of a ban on WhatsApp and Google Play, as reported by the official IRNA news agency. This decision was made by the Supreme Council of Cyber Space during a meeting led by President Masoud Pezeshkian. The president, known for his reformist stance, has committed to easing social media restrictions in the country.

Telecommunication Minister Sattar Heshemi shared on X that this move represents a "first step" towards reducing online restrictions. He hinted at the possibility of more services being unblocked in the future, stating, "the path will continue." Despite this development, many residents in Tehran and other cities reported accessing these services on computers but not yet on mobile devices.
Social Media Access and Restrictions
WhatsApp ranks as the third most popular messaging app in Iran, following Instagram and Telegram. The ban on WhatsApp and Google Play was initially enforced in 2022 amid widespread protests. These protests erupted after a woman died while in custody for allegedly breaching Iran's strict dress code enforced by the morality police.
The protests subsided in 2023 following a severe crackdown by police and security forces. This crackdown resulted in hundreds of deaths and thousands of imprisonments. Over the years, Iran has restricted access to various social media platforms. However, many Iranians have resorted to using proxies and VPNs to bypass these blocks.
The recent decision to lift the ban marks a significant shift in Iran's approach to internet freedom. It reflects President Pezeshkian's reformist agenda aimed at increasing access to digital platforms. As the situation evolves, it remains to be seen how this change will affect everyday internet usage for Iranians.
