Prime Minister Narendra Modi has arrived in Brunei for a historic two-day visit, marking the first time an Indian Prime Minister has travelled to this Southeast Asian nation.

Modi's visit includes a meeting with Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah at his renowned residence, the Istana Nurul Iman Palace, known for its grandeur and record-setting size, as reported by ANI.

The Istana Nurul Iman Palace: A Marvel of Opulence

The Istana Nurul Iman, translating to "Palace of the Light of Faith," is celebrated as the world's largest residential palace and holds a Guinness World Record for its size. Situated near Brunei's capital, Bandar Seri Begawan, the palace was commissioned by Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah in 1981. Designed by Filipino architect Leonardo Locsin and completed in 1984 at a cost of approximately $1.4 billion, the palace is a testament to both luxury and scale, as reported by The Daily Guardian.

Spanning an astounding 200,000 square meters, the Istana Nurul Iman boasts 1,788 rooms, 257 bathrooms, and 44 staircases made from 38 types of marble. It features a grand banquet hall with a capacity of 5,000 guests, a garage for 110 cars, an air-conditioned stable for 200 polo ponies, and five swimming pools. Additionally, the palace includes a mosque capable of accommodating 1,500 worshippers, as reported by The Daily Guardian.

Architectural Splendor and Cultural Significance

The palace's architecture reflects a blend of Brunei's Islamic culture and Malay traditions. The design incorporates lavish gold and marble elements, with a central dome adorned with 22-carat gold. Interior design by Khuan Chew, known for his work on Dubai's Burj Al Arab, adds to the palace's opulence. The palace also houses a world-class art collection, including a $70 million Renoir painting purchased by the Sultan in 1980.

The Istana Nurul Iman is not only a royal residence but also a hub of governmental activity. Key officials and many members of the royal family have their offices within the palace. Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, known for his extravagant lifestyle, is one of the world's wealthiest monarchs. His palace, valued at over ₹2,550 crores, is adorned with gold and includes the world's largest luxury car garage. The Sultan's private plane, often referred to as a "flying palace," is equipped with extensive gold fittings and is part of his impressive collection of luxury vehicles, as reported by The Daily Guardian.

The Sultan's wealth is evident in his personal expenditures, including $20,000 for a haircut flown in from London and a private zoo with rare animals. His property portfolio, estimated at $30 billion, includes a vast collection of luxury cars and a private Airbus A340 gifted to his daughter.

Brunei, with a Muslim majority population of approximately 80%, remains a unique and sovereign state with strict regulations.
