Indian Astronauts Nair And Shukla Set For US Space Mission: Shukla To Fly To ISS, Nair As Backup

More than a year after PM Narendra Modi announced during his US visit that an Indian astronaut would travel to the International Space Station (ISS) as part of a US mission, Isro has signed a space flight agreement (SFA) with Axiom Space.

This agreement will send Group Capt Prashanth Nair and Group Capt Shubhanshu Shukla on the mission.

Isro's Human Space Flight Centre (HSFC) has recommended Shukla as the prime Mission Pilot, with Nair serving as the backup. The final approval for their flight to the ISS will be given by the Multilateral Crew Operations Panel (MCOP). Both Nair and Shukla are among the four astronaut-designates selected for India's Gaganyaan mission, which aims to send astronauts to space and bring them back safely.

India-US Space Collaboration

The agreement with Axiom Space, identified by Nasa as a service provider, is for the upcoming Axiom-4 mission to the ISS. "This collaboration follows the joint statement made during PM Modi's state visit to the US in June 2023, which envisioned a joint Isro-Nasa effort on the ISS," Isro stated on Friday.

Training for the selected astronauts is set to begin in August 2024. During their time on the ISS, they will conduct scientific research, technology demonstrations, and engage in space outreach activities. This mission is expected to provide valuable experience for India's Human Space Program and strengthen space flight cooperation between Isro and Nasa.

Significant Milestone

This collaboration marks a significant milestone in India's space exploration efforts and showcases the growing partnership between India and the US in space research and technology. As this mission progresses, it is likely to generate considerable interest both nationally and internationally, potentially paving the way for future joint ventures in space exploration, as reported by Times Of India.

The work on India's Gaganyaan programme continues as planned. This programme proposes to send astronauts into space and ensure their safe return. The involvement of Nair and Shukla in this mission highlights India's commitment to advancing its human spaceflight capabilities.

The collaboration with Axiom Space aligns with India's broader goals of enhancing its presence in international space missions. By participating in such missions, India aims to gain valuable experience that will benefit its own human spaceflight initiatives.

This partnership not only strengthens ties between Isro and Nasa but also underscores India's growing role in global space exploration. The successful execution of this mission could open doors for more collaborative projects between India and other countries involved in space research, as reported by Times Of India.

The journey of these astronauts will be closely monitored by both nations, reflecting their shared commitment to advancing human knowledge through space exploration. The training and subsequent mission will serve as a testament to what can be achieved through international cooperation in science and technology.

As India prepares for this historic mission, it continues to build its capabilities in human spaceflight. The experience gained from this collaboration will be invaluable for future missions under India's Human Space Program, as per media reports.
