India Pledges Support for Peace in Ukraine, Modi Tells Zelenskyy

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a significant diplomatic engagement, met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Italy's Apulia. During this high-level interaction, PM Modi emphasized India's commitment to supporting a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, advocating for dialogue and diplomacy as the primary means to achieve peace. This meeting also highlighted the upcoming Swiss Peace Conference for Ukraine, where India is set to send a high-level delegation led by Pavan Kapoor, Secretary West in the Ministry of External Affairs.

India Backs Ukraine Peace

The discussions between Modi and Zelenskyy were comprehensive, covering the Peace Summit's agenda and bilateral relations, with a particular focus on trade and technological cooperation in agriculture. The Ukrainian President expressed his gratitude towards PM Modi for India's participation in the Peace Summit, underscoring the importance of India's role in international efforts to resolve the conflict. The meeting was described by Modi as "very productive," signaling India's eagerness to enhance bilateral ties with Ukraine.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) released a statement detailing the exchange of views on the situation in Ukraine and the forthcoming Peace Summit in Switzerland. It reiterated India's stance on encouraging peaceful solutions through diplomatic channels. Additionally, Modi thanked President Zelenskyy for his warm wishes on Modi's assumption of office for a third term, further solidifying the cordial relations between the two nations.

On the technological front, both leaders explored opportunities for exchanging expertise in new agricultural technologies. This discussion points towards a broader collaboration potential beyond immediate geopolitical concerns, highlighting the multifaceted nature of India-Ukraine relations. The functioning of the Black Sea export corridor was also discussed, emphasizing its role in enhancing trade between the two countries.

External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal shared insights into the meeting through a post on X, noting that the leaders reviewed bilateral relationships and exchanged views on the situation in Ukraine. The presence of External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra in Modi's delegation underscored the importance India places on its relationship with Ukraine and its commitment to peace.

The backdrop of this meeting is set against ongoing hostilities in Ukraine, with India maintaining a consistent position that dialogue and diplomacy are essential for resolving conflicts. The Swiss Peace Summit, scheduled for June 15 and 16, represents a significant international effort to chart a roadmap towards peace in Ukraine. India's participation at an appropriate level was confirmed earlier this week, with Switzerland extending an invitation to Prime Minister Modi to attend.

This engagement between Modi and Zelenskyy not only reaffirms India's stance on peaceful conflict resolution but also sets a positive tone for future cooperation between India and Ukraine across various sectors. As global leaders convene in Switzerland for the Peace Summit, the international community remains hopeful for constructive outcomes that will pave the way towards lasting peace in Ukraine.
