Former PM Imran Khan and Wife's Remand Extended in Toshakhana Case

A court in Pakistan has extended the remand of former prime minister Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi by seven days in the Toshakhana case. The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) accused them of purchasing and selling a jewellery set from the Toshakhana, violating laws.

Imran Khans Remand Extended Again

The Toshakhana is a repository for gifts given to government officials by foreign dignitaries. According to its rules, such gifts must be reported to the Cabinet Division. Khan, 71, and Bushra, 49, were presented in an anti-accountability court at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi on Monday.

Extension of Remand

The NAB prosecutor requested a 14-day extension to continue investigating allegations of illegally receiving gifts. However, the court granted only a seven-day extension and ordered the couple to be produced again on July 29 for further proceedings.

The previous remand of eight days ended on Monday, necessitating their appearance before the court. Earlier, Khan and Bushra were arrested on July 13 following their acquittal in an un-Islamic marriage case.

Details of the Case

The anti-corruption watchdog claims that the former couple violated laws by selling a jewellery set they had purchased from the Toshakhana. The Toshakhana rules mandate that all gifts received by government officials must be reported to the Cabinet Division.

Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi were incarcerated at Adiala Jail when they appeared before the anti-accountability court. The hearing was held within the jail premises due to security concerns.

Legal Proceedings

The court's decision to extend their remand came after considering the NAB's request for more time to investigate. The couple will remain in custody until their next court appearance on July 29.

The NAB's investigation focuses on whether Khan and his wife received and sold gifts illegally. This case adds to the legal troubles faced by the former prime minister and his spouse.

The court's decision highlights ongoing efforts by Pakistani authorities to address corruption allegations against high-profile individuals. The outcome of this case could have significant implications for both Khan and Bushra Bibi.

The extension of their remand allows investigators more time to gather evidence and build their case against the couple. The next hearing will be crucial in determining the future course of action in this matter.

This development is part of broader efforts by Pakistan's anti-corruption agencies to hold public officials accountable for their actions. The Toshakhana case is one of several legal challenges currently facing Imran Khan and his wife.

The legal proceedings are closely watched by both supporters and critics of Khan, reflecting the high stakes involved in this case. As investigations continue, more details are expected to emerge about the allegations against the former prime minister and his spouse.
