Hawaii's Kilauea Volcano Erupts in Remote Area, No Immediate Threat

Kilauea, recognized globally as one of the most active volcanoes, commenced an eruption early on Monday in a secluded area not seen active for the past fifty years, as reported by the US Geological Surveys Hawaiian Volcano Observatory. This recent volcanic activity is located approximately 1.6 kilometres south of the Kilauea caldera, nestled within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, a site with its last eruption dating back to December 1974. The vicinity of the caldera has been off-limits to the public since 2008 due to various hazards such as ground fissures, unstable crater walls, and frequent rockfalls.

Kilauea Volcano Erupts Again

Current webcam imagery has captured a visible glow, a clear indication that lava is erupting from fissures on the ground. The 1974 eruption had a brief lifespan of about six hours; however, the duration of this current eruption remains uncertain. Despite its ongoing status, the eruption is confined to a remote part of the national park, characterized by low eruptive volume, thereby posing no immediate threat to human life or critical infrastructure, according to the observatory's statement. Big Island Mayor Mitch Roth reassured residents, emphasizing that the eruption is occurring in one of the safest possible locations within the park and that no property is at risk.

The primary concern during eruptions of Kilauea is typically the emission of volcanic gases which combine with the atmosphere to form volcanic smog, or vog. This vog poses health risks to both residents and visitors, besides having detrimental effects on vegetation and livestock. Mayor Roth expressed concerns regarding air quality, noting that communities such as Oceanview and Naalehu might face air quality issues due to the eruption.

In the hours leading up to the eruption, approximately 250 earthquakes were recorded beneath the summit of Kilauea, signaling increased volcanic activity. The observatory has committed to providing daily updates on the eruption and will issue additional reports if there are significant changes in volcanic activity.
