Kamala Harris and Tim Walz Open Up in First Major Campaign TV Interview

Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz gave their first major television interview of their presidential campaign on Thursday. The interview with CNN's Dana Bash, taped at Kim's Cafe in Savannah, Georgia, will air at 9 pm EDT. This interview is a significant opportunity for Harris to address criticism about avoiding uncontrolled environments and to define her campaign ahead of a debate with former President Donald Trump on September 10.

Harris, Walz Discuss Campaign in TV Interview

Campaign Strategy in Georgia

Harris is currently on a two-day bus tour through southeast Georgia, culminating in an evening rally in Savannah. Campaign officials believe that winning Georgia requires making inroads in Republican strongholds. The tour includes stops at local businesses and meetings with volunteers to engage voters directly.

During the tour, Harris visited Dottie's Market in Savannah and spoke with the owner's mother while crowds watched. She discussed plans for a tax cut aimed at small business start-ups. Harris also met with volunteers before heading to a rally and then returning to Washington.

Media Engagement and Criticism

Harris has faced criticism from Republicans for her limited media access over the past month. The Trump campaign has kept track of the days she has gone without giving an interview, suggesting she needs a "babysitter," which is why Walz accompanies her. Despite this, Harris has conducted several interviews during her vice presidency, including with The Associated Press.

Trump has primarily given interviews to conservative media outlets but has held more open press conferences recently. He commented online about the CNN interview, saying, "Dana Bash of CNN has a chance at greatness today. If she gave a fair but tough interview of Comrade Kamala Harris, she will expose her as being totally inept and ill-suited for the job of President."

Engaging Voters and Building Momentum

The campaign aims to motivate voters in GOP-leaning areas who don't typically see candidates. Michael Tyler, Harris' campaign communications director, stated that bus tours provide an "opportunity to get to places we don't usually go and make sure we're competing in all communities." These events are designed to create viral moments that can reach voters nationwide.

On Wednesday, Harris and Walz spent time with a high school marching band and visited a barbecue restaurant in Savannah. These stops allow voters to learn "not just what they stand for, but who they are as people," according to Tyler.

Upcoming Campaign Events

Harris has another campaign blitz planned for Labour Day with Biden in Detroit and Pittsburgh as the election approaches. The first mail ballots will be sent out in just two weeks, adding urgency to their efforts.

Democrats' enthusiasm for voting in November has increased significantly over the past few months. According to Gallup polling, about 8 in 10 Democrats now say they are more enthusiastic than usual about voting, compared to 55% in March. This enthusiasm gives them an edge they lacked earlier this year.

In contrast, Republicans' enthusiasm has grown less over the same period, with about two-thirds now saying they are more enthusiastic than usual about voting.

The CNN interview provides Harris with a platform to connect with voters and build momentum following Joe Biden's exit from the race and the Democratic National Convention. Joint interviews during election years are common; however, Harris had not done an in-depth solo interview since becoming her party's standard-bearer five weeks ago.

This interview is crucial as Harris and Walz continue introducing themselves to voters. Unlike Trump and Biden, who have near-universal recognition, Harris and Walz are still working on building their public profiles.
