Harriet Tubman Posthumously Awarded General Rank During Veterans Day Ceremony

Harriet Tubman, a renowned abolitionist, was posthumously honoured with the rank of general on Monday. This recognition took place at the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad State Park in Maryland's Dorchester County. The ceremony, held on Veterans Day, saw Tubman being named a one-star brigadier general in the state's National Guard. Governor Wes Moore remarked that this event was significant not only for Maryland but for the entire United States.

"Today, we celebrate a soldier and a person who earned the title of veteran," Moore stated. "Today we celebrate one of the greatest authors of the American story." Tubman, who escaped slavery in 1849 and settled in Philadelphia, played a crucial role in establishing the Underground Railroad network. She led many enslaved Black individuals to freedom and later served as a scout, spy, and nurse for the Union Army during the Civil War.

Harriet Tubman's Legacy

Tubman's legacy continues to inspire many. She guided 150 Black soldiers on a gunboat raid in South Carolina during her service. Governor Moore highlighted her bravery, noting that she could have stayed in Philadelphia to coordinate abolitionist efforts but chose to take risks instead. "She knew that leadership means you have to be willing to do what you are asking others to do," Moore said.

The ceremony included a symbolic pinning event where Tubman's great-great-great-grandniece, Tina Wyatt, participated. Wyatt praised Tubman's enduring legacy of courage, generosity, and faith. She acknowledged that Veterans Day is as relevant to Tubman as it is to any other servicemember. "Aunt Harriet was one of those veterans informally," Wyatt said. "She gave up any rights that she had obtained for herself to be able to fight for others."

Recognition and Commemoration

Tubman's status as an iconic historical figure has grown over recent years. Philadelphia has commissioned a Black artist to create a 14-foot bronze statue of her, set for display next year. In 2022, a Chicago elementary school was renamed in her honour, replacing its previous namesake with racist views. Despite these recognitions, plans to feature Tubman on the USD 20 bill remain stalled.

Tubman's contributions during the Civil War were monumental. Her work as a scout and spy significantly aided Union efforts. Her selflessness and dedication continue to resonate today, serving as an enduring example of courage and leadership.

The ceremony at the state park was not just about honouring Tubman's past achievements but also about recognising her lasting impact on American history. Her story remains a testament to resilience and determination in the face of adversity.
