Armed Gang Takes Hospital Hostage in Haiti, Plea for Help from Director
A heavily armed gang bursts into a hospital in Haiti, taking hundreds of women, children, and newborns hostage. The director pleads for help via social media as the situation unfolds.
In a shocking turn of events, a heavily armed gang stormed a hospital in Haiti, taking hundreds of women, children, and newborns hostage. The incident was confirmed by Jose Ulysse, the founder, and director of the Fontaine Hospital Center in the Cite Soleil slum of the capital, Port-au-Prince.
Details Remain Unclear

No further details have been released, and the motives behind the hostage-taking remain unknown. Ulysse did not respond to requests for further comment. The hospital, located in a gang-infested area, is considered a lifeline for the community, providing much-needed medical care in a region plagued by violence.
Gang Behind the Attack
Ulysse identified the perpetrators as members of the Brooklyn gang, led by Gabriel Jean-Pierre, also known as "Ti Gabriel." Jean-Pierre is a prominent figure in Haiti's gang landscape, leading the powerful G-Pep alliance, one of two rival coalitions in the country. The Brooklyn gang, with approximately 200 members, controls several areas within Cite Soleil and is involved in various criminal activities, including extortion, hijacking, and violence against civilians.
Growing Power of Gangs
Gangs in Haiti have been growing increasingly powerful, particularly since the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in July 2021. The number of kidnappings and killings has been on the rise, creating an atmosphere of fear and insecurity. Earlier this year, armed gang members stormed a Doctors Without Borders hospital and abducted a patient from an operating room, highlighting the audacity and reach of these criminal organizations.
Call for Help
In a desperate plea for help, Ulysse took to social media, highlighting the gravity of the situation. The hospital, considered an oasis in a violent and lawless area, now finds itself under siege. The safety and well-being of the hostages, including vulnerable women, children, and newborns, hang in the balance.
Urgent Need for Action
The incident underscores the urgent need for the Haitian government and international organizations to address the escalating gang violence in the country. The impunity with which gangs operate and the lack of law and order have created a humanitarian crisis. The situation at the Fontaine Hospital Center is a stark reminder of the urgent need for action to restore peace and security in Haiti and protect the lives of innocent civilians.
