Former Santos Fundraiser Pleads Guilty to Wire Fraud

Sam Miele, a former fundraiser for embattled New York Republican Rep. George Santos, pleaded guilty to a federal wire fraud charge, admitting he impersonated a high-ranking congressional aide while raising campaign cash.

In a federal court in New York, Sam Miele, a former fundraiser for US Representative George Santos, admitted guilt to a federal wire fraud charge on Tuesday. Miele acknowledged posing as Dan Meyer, the former chief of staff for Representative Kevin McCarthy, to raise campaign funds for Santos, a Republican from New York.

Miele's fraudulent activities

According to Santos, Miele carried out his fraudulent activities in late 2021 under the alias Dan Meyer. Federal authorities have not yet confirmed Meyer's identity as the congressional aide impersonated by Miele. Miele's fraudulent actions involved soliciting donations from more than a dozen donors between August and December of 2021. He set up a fake email address that resembled Meyer's name to contact potential donors.

Plea deal and sentencing

Miele, who initially faced four wire fraud charges and one count of aggravated identity theft, entered a plea deal and is scheduled to be sentenced on April 30. According to the estimated sentencing guidelines, he could face more than two years in prison. Additionally, he acknowledged committing access device fraud involving credit cards, resulting in losses totaling approximately $100,000.

Santos' campaign finance irregularities

Miele is the second campaign aide to Santos to accept a plea deal in a federal investigation. Earlier, Nancy Marks, the former treasurer for Santos, pleaded guilty to a fraud conspiracy charge. Marks implicated Santos in a scheme to embellish his campaign finance reports with a fake loan and fictitious donors. Santos himself is facing a 23-count federal indictment alleging identity theft and unauthorized use of campaign donor credit cards.

Santos' response and ongoing investigations

Santos has denied the charges against him and pleaded not guilty. Despite the ongoing criminal case and House Ethics Committee investigation, he survived a vote to expel him from the House earlier this month. In an interview with The Associated Press, Santos claimed that he fired Miele in late 2021 upon learning of his impersonation of Meyer.

The guilty plea of Sam Miele sheds light on the campaign finance irregularities surrounding US Representative George Santos. Miele's fraudulent activities and the ongoing investigations into Santos' campaign finances raise concerns about the integrity of the political process. As the legal proceedings unfold, the public awaits further developments in this unfolding saga.
