Former Mayor of Louisiana Town Faces Charges Involving Minor

A former mayor of a small city in southwest Louisiana is now facing serious charges. Misty Clanton Roberts, 42, was arrested by Louisiana State Police on Thursday. She faces charges of third-degree rape and contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile. News outlets reported that she was released from Beauregard Parish jail after posting a USD 75,000 bond.

Ex-Mayor Charged with Minors Rape

Details of the Allegations

The alleged incident involves a minor, but specific details about the victim's age, gender, or hometown have not been disclosed. Sgt. Ross Brennan, a state police spokesman, stated that the juvenile victim and another minor informed the Special Victims Unit about the alleged sexual encounter with Roberts while she was serving as mayor of DeRidder.

Roberts' arrest occurred less than a week after her sudden resignation from her mayoral position. On July 27, she submitted her resignation letter to the city council. Prior to this, she had informed Council Clerk Glenna Luther in another letter that she would be taking an unplanned two-week leave and had appointed Fire Chief Ken Harlow as acting mayor during her absence.

Legal Representation and Public Support

Adam Johnson, Roberts' attorney, issued a statement to KPLC-TV asserting her innocence. "She has not been charged with a crime and/or convicted of any crime," Johnson said. "We trust the public will respect her constitutional presumption of innocence which is fundamental to our system of justice. Misty and her family are very grateful for the support they have received from their friends and neighbours and we look forward to putting this unfortunate situation behind them."

Roberts made history in 2018 by becoming the first woman to serve as mayor of DeRidder. She was re-elected for a second term in 2022 as an independent candidate.

It remains unclear if an arraignment date has been set for Roberts. The investigation continues as authorities gather more information regarding the allegations against her.

Roberts' sudden departure from office and subsequent arrest have left the community in shock. The city of DeRidder, home to around 10,000 residents and located approximately 80 km north of Lake Charles, is now grappling with these developments.

The case has drawn significant attention due to Roberts' position and the nature of the charges. Local residents are closely following updates as they unfold.

The situation underscores the importance of due process and the presumption of innocence until proven guilty. The legal proceedings will determine the outcome based on evidence presented in court.

Roberts' tenure as mayor saw various initiatives aimed at improving community welfare. Her abrupt exit has raised questions about the future leadership of DeRidder.

As events continue to develop, residents await further details from law enforcement and legal representatives involved in the case.
