Elon Musk Vs. Olaf Scholz: How The Tesla CEO’s Endorsement Of AfD Is Shaking Up Germany’s Snap Elections

Elon Musk has once again stirred global political waters, this time by openly opposing German Chancellor Olaf Scholz ahead of Germany's snap elections. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Musk urged Germans to reject Scholz, writing, "Sag Nein zu Scholz!" (Say No to Scholz!). This came after the ruling Social Democrats (SPD) officially named Scholz as their candidate for the federal elections, scheduled for February 23.

What Sparked Musk's Opposition?

Musk's comments were in response to two news reports:

  • SPD's announcement that Scholz would be their candidate for Chancellor.
  • A controversial judicial ruling that allegedly gave a harsher sentence to a woman who spoke out against migrant gang rapists than to the offenders themselves.
  • The Tesla and SpaceX CEO has been vocal about his discontent with Germany's political landscape, particularly in areas concerning immigration policies and free speech.

Musk's Support for the Far-Right AfD

Taking his political stance further, Musk has endorsed the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, known for its nationalist and Euroskeptic views. On January 9, Musk described AfD co-leader Alice Weidel as "very reasonable" and called on Germans to support the party.

During an X audio livestream with Weidel, Musk made an even bolder statement:

"Only AfD can save Germany, end of story. People really need to get behind AfD, or things will get much worse in Germany."

He also compared the political climate in Germany to the U.S., saying that, just as Americans voted for Trump to demand change, Germans should do the same by backing AfD.

How Germany is Reacting to Musk's Comments

1. German Government Condemns Musk

Musk's endorsement of AfD has not gone unnoticed. Germany's government accused him of election interference, with SPD co-leader Lars Klingbeil comparing Musk to Vladimir Putin.

  • Christiane Hoffmann, a government spokesperson, stated that Musk was attempting to influence German elections, a move she found highly concerning.

  • She also pointed out that AfD is under surveillance by Germany's Office for the Protection of the Constitution for alleged right-wing extremism.
  • 2. CDU Leader Warns of Economic Consequences

    • Friedrich Merz, leader of the opposition Christian Democratic Union (CDU), also criticized Musk's involvement, calling it an unprecedented case of foreign interference in an allied nation's politics.
    • Merz warned that AfD's policies, particularly its push for Germany to exit the European Union (EU), could have devastating economic consequences.

    3. AfD's Response: Musk as a Political Ally?

    • AfD leaders welcomed Musk's endorsement, with Alice Weidel responding enthusiastically. She reiterated AfD's stance on immigration, security, and support for Israel, claiming her party was the "only protector of the Jewish people" in Germany.

Why is Musk Involved in German Politics?

Musk's business interests in Germany, particularly Tesla's Gigafactory in Berlin, could be a key motivator. Germany's strict labor and environmental regulations have previously clashed with Tesla's operations. Supporting AfD, which opposes EU environmental policies, might align with Musk's corporate interests.

Additionally, Musk has frequently criticized Western governments for restricting free speech and pushing progressive immigration policies, two areas where Germany's SPD-led government has strong stances.

Final Thoughts: A Battle of Influence?

Elon Musk's vocal endorsement of AfD has added a new dimension to Germany's already intense snap election battle. Whether his influence will actually sway voters remains to be seen, but his intervention has sparked a larger debate on foreign interference, political bias, and free speech.

With Germany heading to the polls on February 23, all eyes will be on whether Musk's comments will have any real political impact-or if they will backfire against AfD.
