Elon Musk Backs Germany's AfD: Bold Move Or Election Meddling?
Elon Musk, billionaire entrepreneur and CEO of Tesla, has ignited a political firestorm in Germany by openly supporting the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party ahead of the country's parliamentary elections in February.
His endorsement, published in the prominent German newspaper Welt am Sonntag, has drawn sharp criticism and sparked heated debates over the role of foreign influence in domestic politics.

Musk's Controversial Commentary
In his commentary, Musk described the AfD as "the last spark of hope for this country," advocating that the party could lead Germany into a future marked by "economic prosperity, cultural integrity, and technological innovation." He asserted that his investments in Germany gave him the right to express his views on the nation's political and economic trajectory.
The Tesla CEO's remarks were an expansion of a post he had previously shared on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), where he wrote, "Only the AfD can save Germany."
German Government Reacts
A spokesperson for the German government responded to Musk's commentary, accusing him of attempting to influence the federal elections. While acknowledging Musk's freedom to express his opinion, the spokesperson remarked, "Freedom of opinion also covers the greatest nonsense."
AfD and Musk's Support
The Alternative for Germany (AfD) party has often been associated with far-right ideologies. However, Musk dismissed these characterizations, pointing out that Alice Weidel, the party's leader, has a same-sex partner from Sri Lanka. "Does that sound like Hitler to you? Please!" Musk wrote, aiming to challenge the party's extremist portrayal.
Divisive Reactions in Germany
Musk's endorsement has divided opinion in Germany. Supporters of the AfD have lauded Musk for his bold stance, while critics argue that his influence as a foreign investor could destabilize Germany's democratic process. German media has also taken up the debate, questioning the boundaries of free speech and the ethical implications of Musk's involvement in the country's politics.
A History of Political Endorsements
This is not the first time Musk has waded into politics. In the United States, he openly backed Donald Trump's presidential bid and reportedly provided financial support to Trump's campaign. Political analysts credited Musk with helping drum up support for Trump among voters.
Free Speech or Intrusion?
The ongoing debate surrounding Musk's commentary has underscored the challenges of balancing free speech with national sovereignty in an era of global influence. As Germany heads toward its elections, the impact of Musk's endorsement on the political landscape remains to be seen.
Whether viewed as an exercise of free speech or an intrusive act, Musk's comments have undeniably added a new layer of complexity to Germany's political discourse.
