Eid-ul-Adha 2024: Why Is Hajj Significant For Muslims During Bakra Eid 2024?
Every year, millions of Muslims worldwide embark on a profound pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia known as Hajj.
As one of the Five Pillars of Islam, Hajj is a mandatory religious duty for every financially and physically capable Muslim at least once in their lifetime. It stands as a testament to their faith, unity, and devotion to God.

What is Hajj?
Hajj is an annual Islamic pilgrimage that takes place during the Islamic lunar month of Dhul-Hijja, the twelfth and final month of the Islamic calendar. It holds deep spiritual significance as pilgrims engage in a series of rituals and acts of worship that trace back to the Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) and his family.
Significance to Muslims
For pilgrims, Hajj is more than a religious obligation; it is a transformative journey of repentance and seeking forgiveness from God. It provides a unique opportunity to cleanse oneself of past sins and draw closer to God through devotion and submission.
When is Hajj?
This sacred pilgrimage occurs once a year, with specific dates determined by the Islamic lunar calendar. In 2024, the Hajj will take place during the month of Dhul-Hijja.
The Rituals of Hajj
The journey of Hajj begins with pilgrims entering a state of "ihram," a state of purity and consecration. During ihram, specific rules and prohibitions are observed, symbolizing humility and equality among all pilgrims. Men wear simple white garments, reflecting their readiness to set aside worldly pursuits and focus solely on spiritual devotion.
One of the highlights of Hajj is standing on the plain of Arafat, where pilgrims gather in prayer, supplication, and contemplation. This pivotal moment symbolizes unity and spiritual renewal, as pilgrims beseech God for forgiveness and blessings.
Other Rituals
Pilgrims perform the "tawaf," circling the Kaaba, a cube-shaped structure in the centre of the Masjid al-Haram mosque in Mecca. This ritual, done counterclockwise seven times, signifies the unity of Muslims in their worship of God and their commitment to Islam.
Additionally, pilgrims reenact the journey of Hagar (Hajar), the wife of Prophet Ibrahim, who ran between two hills, Safa and Marwah, in search of water for her son Isma'il (Ishmael). This symbolic act underscores the themes of faith, perseverance, and trust in God's providence.
Eid-ul-Adha: The Feast of Sacrifice
During Hajj, Muslims worldwide also celebrate Eid-ul-Adha, marking Prophet Ibrahim's willingness to sacrifice his son Isma'il as an act of obedience to God. This festival involves the sacrificial slaughter of animals, with the meat distributed to the less fortunate, promoting charity and community solidarity.
Hajj is a profound spiritual journey that transcends individual faith; it unites millions of Muslims from diverse backgrounds, languages, and cultures in a shared experience of devotion and worship. It reinforces core Islamic values of compassion, humility, and submission to the will of God, leaving pilgrims spiritually enriched and renewed.
