Donald Trump To Visit China From May 13-15 As Beijing Confirms High-Stakes Summit

US President Donald Trump will travel to China from May 13 to 15, with Beijing officially confirming the high-stakes visit that is expected to centre on trade disputes, regional security concerns and the ongoing Iran situation. The trip will mark Trump's first visit to China since returning to the White House for a second term.

Trump is expected to hold detailed talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping as both nations attempt to prevent further deterioration in ties between the world's two largest economies. The two leaders had last met in South Korea in October, where they agreed to reduce tensions linked to the prolonged tariff conflict between Washington and Beijing.

Trade And Economic Issues Likely To Dominate Talks

One of the main focus areas during the visit is expected to be trade relations and efforts to avoid another round of tariff battles. Reports suggest Washington may push for a more structured trade arrangement that regulates the exchange of goods between the two countries and provides greater economic stability.

The United States is also expected to seek reliable access to China's rare earth mineral supplies, which remain critical for American technology and defence sectors. Alongside this, both sides could discuss large-scale business agreements, including potential Chinese purchases of Boeing aircraft and higher imports of US agricultural products.

Beijing, on the other hand, is likely to press for reduced restrictions on Chinese companies operating in the United States. Areas such as artificial intelligence and electric vehicles are expected to feature prominently in discussions. Chinese EV manufacturer BYD could emerge as a major talking point as Washington continues debating market access for Chinese-made vehicles.

Taiwan, Hong Kong And Security Concerns On Agenda

Taiwan is expected to remain among the most sensitive subjects during the summit. China has consistently objected to US military backing and arms sales to Taiwan, which Beijing considers part of its territory.

Trump may also raise the issue of jailed Hong Kong media entrepreneur Jimmy Lai during meetings with Chinese officials.

Apart from regional disputes, Trump is also expected to advocate for broader nuclear arms discussions involving China. The US President has argued that existing agreements between Washington and Moscow no longer reflect the present global strategic balance and should include Beijing as a major military power.

Iran Conflict Added Fresh Dimension To Visit

The visit reportedly faced delays because of the conflict involving Iran. Pakistan has recently emerged as an important mediator between Washington and Tehran, while reports have indicated that China may also have quietly encouraged Iran to return to negotiations.

Although Beijing has not officially acknowledged any mediation role, Chinese authorities have stated that the country has been working "tirelessly for peace."

Last week, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi travelled to China and held talks with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi regarding bilateral ties and regional developments.

China continues to remain one of the largest buyers of Iranian oil despite ongoing US sanctions intended to cut off revenue flows to Tehran.

First China Trip Of Trump's Second Term

The upcoming visit is being closely watched globally as it comes amid heightened tensions over trade, military competition and geopolitical influence across Asia and the Middle East.

Both Washington and Beijing are expected to use the summit to stabilise communication channels and explore areas where cooperation remains possible despite deep strategic differences.
