Donald Trump Approves Mumbai Terror Attack Accused Tahawwur Rana's Extradition To India
US President Donald Trump on Thursday announced that his administration has approved the extradition of Tahawwur Rana, an accused in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, to India.
He made the announcement after his meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. "I am pleased to announce that my administration has approved the extradition of one of the plotters (Tahawwur Rana) and one of the very evil people of the world, having to do with the horrific 2008 Mumbai terrorist attack to face justice in India. He is going back to India to face justice," Trump said.

The US State Department had earlier mentioned that it was reviewing the next steps regarding Rana's extradition. A spokesperson reiterated Washington's long-standing support for India's efforts to bring those responsible for the attacks to justice.
India's Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri recently confirmed that with the US Supreme Court dismissing Rana's appeal, Indian authorities are now coordinating with US officials to finalize his surrender.
Tahawwur Hussain Rana, a Pakistani-origin businessman, was convicted for his involvement in the attacks, alongside co-conspirator David Headley, who had pleaded guilty and testified against him. In January 2025, the US Supreme Court rejected Rana's plea to block his extradition, upholding a lower court's ruling.
The 26/11 attacks, which targeted Mumbai's Taj Hotel and other locations, claimed 174 lives, including 20 security personnel and 26 foreigners, and left over 300 injured.
PM Modi Thanks Trump
Prime Minister Narendra Modi thanked the Trump administration over the extradition. At the White House press conference, he said, "India and America have been together in the fight against terrorism. We agree that solid action must be taken to eliminate terrorism that originates on the other side of the border. I am thankful to the president that he has decided to extradite a criminal to India who committed genocide in 2008 in India. The courts in India will take proper action..."
