Rescuers Save Over 100 Dolphins During Cape Cod Mass Stranding
Animal rescuers managed to guide over 100 dolphins away from shallow waters around Cape Cod over the weekend. Approximately 125 Atlantic white-sided dolphins had become stranded, with 13 dying and one being euthanised, according to the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW). The nonprofit stated it was the largest mass-stranding they had encountered in their 26-year history in the area.

Challenges Faced by Rescuers
Misty Niemeyer, IFAW's stranding coordinator, highlighted the difficulties faced on Friday. "It was a 12-hour exhausting response in the unrelenting sun, but the team was able to overcome the various challenges and give the dolphins their best chance at survival," Niemeyer said in a statement. The team initially herded the dolphins on foot into deeper waters before using three small boats equipped with underwater pingers.
The Gut, or Great Island, in Wellfleet, saw ten dolphins die during the stranding on Friday. This location is known for frequent strandings due to its hook-like shape and extreme tidal fluctuations. Teams found one group of ten dolphins swimming in dangerously shallow water at dawn on Saturday and managed to guide them into deeper water.
Efforts by Various Organisations
More than 25 staff members from IFAW and 100 trained volunteers participated in the rescue efforts. They were supported by Whale and Dolphin Conservation, the Center for Coastal Studies, AmeriCorps of Cape Cod, and the New England Aquarium. Scouts also discovered a second group of 25 dolphins swimming close to shore near Eastham, which teams worked to herd away as the tide dropped throughout the morning.
Cape Cod is recognised globally as a hotspot for strandings due to its curved shores and fluctuating tides. There is no definitive reason why these dolphins became stranded, according to rescuers. The curvature of Cape Cod's shores and tidal changes contribute significantly to such incidents.
Teams in Massachusetts faced numerous challenges during the rescue operation. Difficult mud conditions and the spread of dolphins over a large area added to the complexity of the task. Despite these obstacles, rescuers successfully coaxed many dolphins back into deeper waters.
The IFAW noted that this stranding event was unprecedented in scale for them. The organisation has been involved in numerous rescues over its 26-year presence in Cape Cod but had never encountered such a large number of stranded dolphins at once.
The use of underwater pingers played a crucial role in guiding the dolphins away from shallow areas. These devices emit sounds underwater that help direct marine animals towards safer zones. The collaborative effort among various organisations ensured a coordinated and effective response.
The rescue operation underscored the importance of preparedness and collaboration among different groups. The combined expertise and resources of multiple organisations were vital in addressing this large-scale stranding event effectively.
This incident highlights ongoing challenges faced by marine life due to natural geographic features and environmental conditions. Continuous efforts are needed to understand and mitigate such occurrences to protect marine species.
