Democrats Unite Around Harris as Obamas, Emhoff Highlight Convention

Former President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama are set to speak on the second day of the Democratic National Convention. Their appearance aims to bolster Vice President Kamala Harris's campaign against Republican Donald Trump. The event will also feature second gentleman Doug Emhoff, Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer, and Vermont independent Bernie Sanders.

Dems Rally Around Harris, Obamas Speak

The convention's diverse lineup highlights the broad coalition Harris is trying to build. This includes young people, voters of colour, working-class whites, suburban moderates, and anti-Trump Republicans. The theme for the night is "a bold vision for America's future," reflecting a collective desire to prevent a return to a Trump presidency.

Obama's Return to the Convention Stage

Obama, the first Black president of the United States, returns to the convention stage 20 years after his initial appearance in 2004. His speech is expected to affirm why Harris and Walz are suitable leaders for the current moment. He will also outline the tasks ahead for Democrats and highlight the values at stake in this election.

Thousands gathered at Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee hours before the event began. This venue was where Trump accepted the Republican nomination just a month ago. Meanwhile, Trump visited battleground states during the convention, labelling Harris as the "ringleader" of a "Marxist attack on law enforcement."

Speakers from Battleground States

The Harris campaign announced additional speakers from key battleground states who will speak later in the week. These include Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto of Nevada, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, Sen. Gary Peters, and Rep. Elissa Slotkin of Michigan. From Pennsylvania, Sen. Bob Casey will speak, along with Sen. Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin.

Offering prime spots to local elected leaders is a strategic move by Harris's campaign. These leaders often poll better than the top of the ticket in their home states, aiming to reach undecided voters and maximise pathways to 270 electoral votes.

In an unusual move, Harris was travelling to Milwaukee for a rally scheduled at the same time as the convention's prime-time programming. This raises the possibility that she may address the convention via video from her rally.

Republican Critics of Trump

The convention will also feature prominent Republicans who are now critics of Trump. These include former U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger of Illinois, former Georgia Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan, and former Trump White House staffers Olivia Troye and Stephanie Grisham.

Grisham stated ahead of her appearance, "I never thought I'd be speaking at a Democratic convention... But after seeing firsthand who Donald Trump really is... I feel very strongly about speaking out." Her presence seems intended to needle Trump.

The Democrats' pivot towards the campaign's final 76 days follows an opening night designed to give a graceful exit to the incumbent president. Biden didn't take the stage until around 11:30 pm on Monday night due to schedule delays.

Democratic National Convention director Alex Hornbrook mentioned that adjustments were made in real-time on Monday night and further changes would be implemented on Tuesday evening to stay on track.

Obama's commitment extends beyond his speech; he plans to engage in various traditional and creative tactics to reach voters over the coming weeks. His involvement underscores his belief that this is an all-hands-on-deck moment for Democrats.

The event underscores a unified effort among Democrats and some Republicans to support Harris's campaign against Trump. The diverse lineup and strategic speaker placements aim to build a broad coalition essential for securing electoral victory in November.

The Democratic National Convention continues with high-profile appearances and strategic moves aimed at solidifying support for Kamala Harris's presidential bid against Donald Trump this fall.
