Contrary To Spirit Of Friendship: Bangladesh Reacts To India's Objection Over Chinmoy Krishna Das Arrest

Bangladesh has responded strongly to India's concerns over the arrest of Hindu leader Chinmoy Krishna Das. The Ministry of External Affairs in India had expressed worry about Das's safety after his arrest by Bangladeshi police. Das, who was also part of ISKCON, was recently expelled from the organisation. Bangladesh's Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed disappointment with India's reaction.

India's Ministry of External Affairs highlighted its "deep concern" regarding the arrest and denial of bail for Das. They urged Bangladesh to ensure the safety and security of Hindus and other minorities. The statement from Bangladesh came shortly after India's remarks on November 26, 2024, which they viewed as interference in their internal matters.

Bangladesh's Response to India's Concerns

The Bangladeshi government expressed dismay over what it sees as a misinterpretation of Das's arrest. They stated that he was detained on specific charges, and such statements misrepresent facts. Bangladesh emphasised that these comments do not align with the spirit of friendship between the two countries or reflect the harmony among different faiths within Bangladesh.

Bangladesh reiterated its commitment to ending impunity for human rights violations against all citizens, regardless of religious identity. They stressed that every Bangladeshi has the right to practice their religion freely without interference. The government is determined to treat both religious majorities and minorities equally.

India's Concerns Over Minority Safety

India raised concerns about attacks on Hindus and other minorities in Bangladesh by extremist groups. The Indian MEA pointed out several documented incidents involving arson, looting, vandalism, and desecration of temples and deities. These incidents have heightened tensions between the two nations.

A Bangladeshi court denied bail to Chinmoy Krishna Das, who faces sedition charges. His arrest led to protests by community members in Dhaka and Chattogram. Supporters, including lawyers, protested outside the court as Das was escorted under tight security.

Details Surrounding Das's Arrest

Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari was arrested near Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka while travelling to Chattogram. He is a leader of Sammilita Sanatani Jote, a Hindu group in Bangladesh. Following his arrest, he was taken to Chattogram where he faced legal proceedings amid protests from his supporters.

The situation continues to develop as both countries navigate this diplomatic challenge. The focus remains on ensuring safety for all communities while respecting each nation's sovereignty and internal affairs.
