Indian cricket star Rohit Sharma was conferred with the Padma Shri by President Droupadi Murmu during the second Civil Investiture Ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi on Tuesday. The prestigious civilian honour recognised Rohit's outstanding contribution to Indian cricket and his achievements on the international stage.

Rohit Honoured For Outstanding Cricketing Career

Rohit, who captained India to victory in the 2024 T20 World Cup and the 2025 Champions Trophy, is regarded as one of the finest batters in the history of Indian cricket. Known for his dominance in white-ball cricket, he has scored more than 20,000 international runs and registered 50 centuries for the country.

A video of the Indian cricketer receiving the Padma Shri from President Murmu at the ceremony was widely shared on social media, drawing congratulatory messages from fans and members of the sporting fraternity.

Vijay Amritraj Conferred Padma Bhushan

Former tennis player Vijay Amritraj was among the other distinguished recipients at the ceremony and received the Padma Bhushan. A celebrated figure in Indian sports, Amritraj enjoyed a successful tennis career, reaching a career-high ranking of World No. 16.

He won 15 singles and 14 doubles titles on the ATP Tour and reached the quarterfinals of both Wimbledon and the US Open. Amritraj also played a key role in India's Davis Cup campaigns, helping the nation reach the finals in 1974 and 1987.

65 Padma Awards Presented At Ceremony

President Murmu conferred a total of 65 Padma Awards during the Civil Investiture Ceremony. The honours included two Padma Vibhushan awards, seven Padma Bhushan awards and 56 Padma Shri awards.

The ceremony formed part of the Padma Awards announced by the government on the eve of Republic Day 2026. This year's list comprised 131 awardees, including five Padma Vibhushan recipients, 13 Padma Bhushan awardees and 113 Padma Shri honourees.

Mammootty, Alka Yagnik Among Other Recipients

Actor Mammootty and playback singer Alka Yagnik were also honoured during the ceremony. The Padma Awards are among India's highest civilian honours and recognise distinguished service and exceptional achievements across diverse fields, including sports, arts, literature, education, medicine, science, public affairs and social work.

Instituted in 1954, the awards are announced annually on Republic Day and celebrate individuals who have made significant contributions to their respective fields and to the nation.
