Rajinder Singh Minhas Charged in Connection with Flint River Oil Discharge Incident

A chemical company executive faces charges related to an oil spill that created a lengthy oily sheen on Michigan's Flint River over two years ago. Rajinder Singh Minhas, 60, from Rochester, Michigan, was arrested and arraigned last week. He faces charges including falsifying public records, endangering the public, discharging harmful substances into state waters, and making false statements about air pollution control, according to Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel.

Minhas held roles as director and treasurer at Lockhart Chemical in Flint. The company produces coatings, metalworking additives, hydraulic fluids, and lubricants. Nessel stated that essential maintenance and upgrades at the facility were allegedly mishandled and ignored. This neglect led to the release of approximately 15,000 gallons of an oil-chemical mixture on June 15, 2022.

Environmental Impact and Legal Proceedings

The spill originated from a storm sewer that empties into the river, as reported by a spokesperson for the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy at the time. The state subsequently mandated that the company cease using faulty wastewater and stormwater systems immediately and implement other necessary changes. Lockhart Chemical has since filed for bankruptcy.

Despite the spill, officials confirmed that Flint's drinking water remained safe. The city had previously used the river for its water supply in 2014-15 but switched back to Lake Huron water due to lead contamination issues. Minhas has been released on a personal bond and is scheduled to return to court on January 2 for a probable cause conference.

Company Response and Future Actions

The Associated Press reached out to Lockhart Chemical for comments on Monday but found their listed phone number disconnected. A voicemail was left for Minhas' attorney seeking a statement. The legal proceedings continue as authorities address the environmental impact of the spill.
