Clashes Erupt Between Islamists and Assad Supporters in Syria Amid Political Transition

Clashes erupted in Syria on Wednesday, resulting in the deaths of two fighters from Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), according to interim officials. The exact cause of the confrontation remains unclear. HTS, which recently led a successful offensive against President Bashar Assad's government, has been at the forefront of Syria's transition. Despite their promise of a pluralist system, it is uncertain how they intend to share power.

Clashes in Syria: Islamists vs. Assad Supporters

Since Assad's departure, revenge attacks have claimed the lives of many Syrians, predominantly from the Alawite community, an offshoot of Shiite Islam to which Assad belongs. In Damascus, tensions flared as Alawite protesters clashed with Sunni counter-protesters, leading to gunfire. The Associated Press could not verify the specifics of these incidents.

Alawite Protests and Sectarian Tensions

Alawite demonstrations also occurred along Syria's coast, in Homs, and the Hama countryside. Some protesters demanded the release of former Syrian army soldiers now imprisoned by HTS. These protests were partly fueled by an online video showing an Alawite shrine burning. Interim authorities claimed the footage was outdated and not recent.

Sectarian violence has sporadically erupted since Assad's ouster but has not reached the feared levels after nearly 14 years of civil war. This conflict resulted in approximately half a million deaths and displaced millions across Syria. Recently, some displaced Syrians have begun returning home, attempting to rebuild their lives amid widespread destruction.

Rebuilding Efforts in Idlib

In Idlib's northwestern region, residents are working to restore normalcy by repairing shops and sealing damaged windows. The city and much of its surrounding province have long been under HTS control, led by Ahmad al-Sharaa, formerly known as Abu Mohammed al-Golani. Despite this control, government forces have persistently attacked the area.

Hajjah Zakia Daemessaid, who was displaced during the war, described her return to her home in Idlib's countryside as bittersweet. "My husband and I spent 43 years of hard work saving money to build our home, only to find that all of it has gone to waste," said the 62-year-old.

Efforts to Combat Drug Trafficking

In Damascus on Wednesday, Syria's new authorities conducted raids on warehouses, seizing drugs like Captagon and cannabis previously used by Assad's forces. A million Captagon pills and hundreds of kilograms of cannabis were destroyed by burning, according to interim officials.

The war has left Syria fractured with millions seeking refuge elsewhere or being displaced internally. As some Syrians return home, they face the daunting task of rebuilding amidst significant devastation. Many find their homes reduced to ruins after years of conflict.
