Xi Jinping Signals China's Readiness to Collaborate with Incoming US Administration in Final Meeting with Biden

In a recent meeting, China's leader Xi Jinping expressed readiness to collaborate with the incoming US administration as President-elect Donald Trump prepares to assume office. This discussion took place during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit. Xi's remarks seemed to hint at concerns over Trump's protectionist campaign rhetoric potentially affecting US-China relations. Xi stated, "China is ready to work with a new US administration to maintain communication, expand cooperation and manage differences so as to strive for a steady transition of the China-US relationship for the benefit of the two peoples."

Xi Jinping Ready to Work with New US Leadership

Biden, reflecting on his long-standing relationship with Xi, noted that despite challenges over the past four years, their dialogues have been productive. He said, "Over the past four years, China-US relations have experienced ups and downs, but with the two of us at the helm, we have also engaged in fruitful dialogues and cooperation, and generally achieved stability." The meeting was held in a large conference room at Lima's Defines Hotel and Conference Center.

US-China Relations Under Trump

There is uncertainty about future US-China relations under Trump, who proposed a 60 per cent tariff on Chinese imports during his campaign. Many American companies are already shifting their sourcing away from China. For instance, Steve Madden plans to reduce imports from China by up to 45 per cent next year. Nike and Warby Parker are also diversifying their supply chains.

White House national security advisor Jake Sullivan mentioned that Biden's team would advise Trump's administration on managing competition with Beijing. Sullivan noted this would likely be their most significant foreign policy challenge. Biden's relationship with Xi is seen as crucial on the global stage, and he has invested considerable effort in nurturing it.

Long-Standing Relationship

Biden and Xi first met while both were vice-presidents, forming a bond through travels across the US and China. Biden remarked on their shared experiences: "For over a decade, you and I have spent many hours together, both here and in China and in between. And I think we've spent a long time dealing with these issues." This relationship has been pivotal in navigating complex international matters.

However, recent years have brought challenges. The FBI recently disclosed details of a federal investigation into Chinese cyberespionage targeting US telecommunications networks. Initial findings indicate a significant campaign aimed at stealing information from Americans in government and politics.

US intelligence officials have also reported that China has increased sales of technology to Russia. These include machine tools and microelectronics used by Moscow to produce missiles and other weaponry for its war against Ukraine.

Tensions escalated last year when Biden ordered the downing of a Chinese spy balloon that crossed US airspace. This incident added strain to an already complex relationship between the two nations.

As Biden concludes over 50 years in politics, his interactions with Xi remain among his most significant international engagements. The evolving dynamics between the US and China continue to pose challenges and opportunities for both countries moving forward.
