China: Student Kills 8 Dead, Injures 17 As He Goes On Stabbing Spree In Wuxi

In a tragic unfolding of events, the eastern city of Wuxi in China was shaken on Saturday evening when a 21-year-old student embarked on a deadly rampage, stabbing eight people to death and injuring 17 others, according to a police statement. This violence followed closely on the heels of a devastating hit-and-run in Zhuhai, a city in southern China, where a car plowed into pedestrians outside a sports center, claiming the lives of 35 individuals and leaving 43 injured.

The suspect in the stabbing spree has been identified by his surname, Fan, and preliminary investigations have pointed to his discontent with property division post-divorce as the motive, reported AFP. The tragedy in Wuxi wasn't the only recent incident of violence in public areas, with the Zhuhai hit-and-run happening just days prior, underscoring a disturbing pattern of public attacks.

Eyewitness accounts from the Zhuhai incident painted a chaotic scene at the sports center. Chen, an eyewitness, recounted how the area was popular for evening walks and how he narrowly escaped injury by jumping aside as a car sped towards him and others, knocking down many. Liu, another witness, described to Caixin how the car seemed to deliberately drive in loops, inflicting injuries across all sections of the running track.

The driver responsible for the hit-and-run in Zhuhai, identified as Fan, was apprehended by police on the scene as he attempted to flee. Officers found him in his vehicle, inflicting wounds upon himself with a knife. Currently, Fan is in a coma due to the self-inflicted injuries to his neck and other body parts, rendering him unable to undergo interrogation, police added on Tuesday.

These back-to-back incidents have cast a shadow over public safety in China, raising concerns and prompting discussions about the measures in place to prevent such tragic occurrences. The community and authorities are now faced with the task of understanding and addressing the underlying issues leading to such violent acts.

In conclusion, the recent violent events in Wuxi and Zhuhai have left communities in shock and mourning. As the authorities work to piece together the motives and prevent future tragedies, the incidents serve as a grim reminder of the unpredictable nature of public safety.
