Telegram Users Charged for Soliciting Attacks on Minorities and Officials

Two individuals, allegedly driven by white supremacist beliefs, were charged with using Telegram to incite violence against minorities, government officials, and critical infrastructure in the U.S. The accused, Dallas Erin Humber and Matthew Robert Allison, face 15 federal charges in California's Eastern District. Both were expected in court either late Monday or Tuesday.

Charges for Violence Incitement on Telegram

Justice Department officials stated that the defendants used Telegram to share bomb-making instructions and distribute a list of assassination targets. These targets included a federal judge, a senator, and a former U.S. attorney. They also celebrated previous acts of violence on the platform.

White Supremacist Ideology

The pair allegedly led a group of Telegram channels called "Terrorgram," which prosecutors claim promotes white supremacy and violence. Their calls to action included phrases like "Take Action Now" and "Do your part," according to an indictment unsealed on Monday.

Assistant Attorney General Matthew Olsen commented on the severity of the threat posed by this group. He stated, "I think it would be difficult to overstate the danger and risks that this group posed."

It remains unclear whether Humber or Allison have legal representation at this time. The case highlights ongoing concerns about the use of encrypted messaging apps for extremist activities.

The Justice Department's top national security official emphasized the significant threat posed by such groups. The indictment details how the defendants used Telegram to encourage violent acts and share dangerous materials.

The charges against Humber and Allison underscore the government's efforts to combat domestic terrorism and protect public safety. The case will proceed in the Eastern District of California, where both defendants are set to appear in court.

This incident serves as a reminder of the persistent threat of domestic extremism and the importance of vigilance in monitoring online platforms for such activities.
