Canadian Speaker Expresses Regret over Honoring WWII Nazi Fighter
The speaker of Canada's House of Commons, Anthony Rota, has apologized after recognizing Yaroslav Hunka, a veteran who fought for the First Ukrainian Division under the Nazis in World War II. The recognition took place following an address by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and was met with standing ovations from unaware lawmakers. Rota expressed his regret upon learning more about Hunka's past and extended his apologies to Jewish communities globally.
The Speaker of Canada's House of Commons, Anthony Rota, has issued a public apology for recognising and applauding a man who served in a Nazi military unit during World War II. This incident occurred just after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy delivered an address to the Canadian Parliament on Friday.
Recognition of Yaroslav Hunka

Rota drew attention to 98-year-old Yaroslav Hunka, introducing him as a war hero who fought for the First Ukrainian Division. The announcement was met with standing ovations from Canadian lawmakers present at the session. Notably, Ukraine's President Zelenskyy acknowledged Hunka's salute from the gallery with raised fist during two separate standing ovations.
Rota’s Apology
In light of additional information about Hunka's past that came to his attention later, Rota expressed deep regret over his decision to recognise Hunka. In a statement released on Sunday, he said: "In my remarks following the address of the President of Ukraine, I recognised an individual in the gallery. I have subsequently become aware of more information which causes me to regret my decision to do so." He further clarified that his fellow parliament members and the delegation from Ukraine were not privy to his plan to acknowledge Hunka.
Rota also mentioned that Hunka is from his district and took full responsibility for this action. He extended heartfelt apologies specifically towards Jewish communities both within Canada and globally due to their historical suffering under Nazi rule during World War II.
Hunka Unavailable for Comment
As per reports, Yaroslav Hunka could not be immediately reached out for any comments regarding this matter or response towards Rota’s public apology.
While the incident has sparked controversy and criticism, it also serves as a reminder of the importance of thorough background checks before public recognitions. It underlines the responsibility held by public figures and institutions in acknowledging historical events accurately and sensitively, especially when they involve atrocities such as those committed during World War II.
In conclusion, Speaker Rota's apology is a step towards rectifying his oversight. However, this incident underscores the need for greater vigilance in ensuring that individuals recognised on such platforms have backgrounds that align with the values of justice, peace, and respect for all humanity.
