BRICS Nations Can Enhance Energy Security Through Strategic Cooperation, Says South African Minister
The extended BRICS group has significant potential to collaborate on energy security, according to South African Minister of Energy and Electricity, Kgosientso Ramokgopa. Speaking at the 9th BRICS Energy Ministerial Meeting in Moscow, Ramokgopa emphasised the importance of cooperation among member countries to address energy challenges identified during the BRICS 2023 Summit in South Africa.

Ramokgopa noted that the meeting occurred at a crucial time when countries are trying to balance development goals with energy transition pathways. He stressed the need for these transitions to ensure energy sovereignty and security, promote sustainable economic growth, and provide universal access while addressing environmental concerns. "We must ensure that these transitions safeguard energy sovereignty and security, promote sustainable economic development, facilitate universal access and respond effectively to environmental imperatives, all the while ensuring no one is left behind," he said.
BRICS Expansion and Global Influence
The minister highlighted that this was the first meeting with new BRICS members who joined earlier this year. Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates were added to the original group of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa in January. Ramokgopa stated that this expansion signifies the group's growing influence on the global energy agenda. "This is a pivotal moment, positioning the BRICS to reshape, refocus and reset the global energy architecture to ensure energy access, security, affordability and eradicate energy poverty and promote a just energy transition," he said.
South Africa's inclusive approach to energy transition aims to maintain energy security while supporting socio-economic goals. Ramokgopa urged BRICS nations to leverage their strengths and capabilities for mutual benefit. He mentioned that South Africa's expertise in areas like rare-earth elements could be advantageous for partner countries in powering the green economy.
Global Platforms for Shared Perspectives
Ramokgopa also pointed out that platforms like Brazil hosting the G20 this year and South Africa in 2025 should be used to promote a shared perspective among developing countries. These platforms can help propagate a common world outlook that aligns with the interests of developing nations.
The minister believes that by working together, BRICS members can strengthen their resolve on energy security. This collaboration offers an opportunity to tackle challenges such as the absence of an integrated energy policy framework. The expansion of BRICS membership is seen as a testament to its increasing significance in shaping global energy policies.
The meeting underscored the importance of cooperation among BRICS countries in ensuring energy security. By harnessing their collective strengths and resources, these nations aim to support each other in achieving sustainable development goals while addressing environmental challenges effectively.
