Brazil Criticises Venezuela for Escalating Tensions and Personal Attacks Amidst Diplomatic Disputes

Brazil's government has expressed surprise at the recent "offensive tone" from Venezuela. The Brazilian Foreign Ministry noted this shift in rhetoric, especially towards President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who has been a longstanding ally of Venezuela. The ministry emphasised that personal attacks and rhetorical escalations are not in line with Brazil's respectful approach towards Venezuela.

Brazil Criticises Venezuela Over Rising Tensions

Venezuela's criticism intensified after Brazil did not support its bid to join the BRICS bloc at a summit in Russia. This decision added to existing tensions over Venezuela's July presidential election results. Brazil, along with other countries, had called for transparency regarding the election outcomes.

Diplomatic Strain Over Election Dispute

The Venezuelan Foreign Ministry summoned Brazil's chargé d'affaires, Breno Hermann, to express strong disapproval of what it termed as interventionist remarks by Brazilian officials. Celso Amorim, a former Brazilian foreign minister and adviser to Lula, was accused of acting as a "messenger of American imperialism" by making judgments on Venezuelan processes.

Initially, Brazil chose not to comment publicly to avoid escalating tensions. However, this changed after Venezuela's Bolivarian National Police posted an image on social media depicting Lula's silhouette over Brazil's flag with a warning message. The post declared Venezuela's independence and refusal to accept blackmail.

Brazil's Stance on Sovereignty and Non-Intervention

In response, Brazil reiterated its commitment to non-intervention and respect for sovereignty. The Foreign Ministry explained that Brazil's interest in Venezuela's electoral process is due to its role as a witness to the 2023 Barbados Agreements. These agreements involved Venezuela's government and opposition agreeing on electoral conditions.

Amorim acknowledged discomfort between the two nations during a hearing before Brazilian lawmakers. He attributed this tension to Venezuela's refusal to publish detailed election results. He mentioned that improving diplomatic relations would depend on actions taken by Venezuela.

BRICS Bloc Expansion and Brazil's Position

The BRICS bloc recently expanded to include Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia. However, Brazil opposed Venezuela's inclusion at the summit earlier this month. Amorim stated that Brazil does not want indefinite expansion and believes members should be influential countries representing the region.

Venezuela likened Brazil's stance to U.S.-imposed economic sanctions against it. Meanwhile, Venezuelan electoral authorities claimed they couldn't publish detailed results due to a website hack. The main opposition coalition published vote tally sheets online, declaring their candidate Edmundo González had won by a landslide.

After the July 28 election, Lula, Colombian President Gustavo Petro, and then-Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador attempted to mediate in Venezuela’s election standoff but were unsuccessful. Maduro has since consolidated power by reshuffling his Cabinet and jailing over 2,000 opponents.
